Haaa...Not far off. Read this whole thread to get a good idea of what's involved:
Gordo's 915 Transmission Rebuild I do not want to discourage anyone from trying it themselves, but this thread confirmed that I will definitely be sending mine to a professional when it comes time. It seems like there is much more precision and finesse involved than, say, rebuilding an engine. |

No idea. He's a member here but he's mostly a 914 guy. There used to be a sticky on 914world about when and where his next class would be. No idea if it's still there. He did put out a DVD at one point which you may even be able to get on Amazon. However it's going to be 911/914 specific and not cover the 915 differences. It has some colorful language, but my understanding is that's just Mike being himself. He's my kind of guy.

Yeah, you should be able to reach him via 914World.com - Mike aka Dr. Evil. He rebuilt the transaxle for my '71 914-6.

Dr. Evil (Mike) is a colorful character that also produced a DVD on rebuilding a 901 transmission and did do classes. I think once he finished med school and his residency, work and family life have calmed down his transmission class efforts. He's still rebuilding transmissions at his home.
Check on 914World or see if you can find him on Facebook (Evilwerks LLC)

About 10 years ago, I attended one of his rebuild classes here in Atlanta as a "visitor" over at Auto Atlanta. Very informative - but it was focused specifically on the 901. Of course, if you learn what a 901 synchro that is in good shape looks like, you know what to look at on a 915 synchro!

He used to travel on his school breaks to give the classes in 914 hot spots around the country.

I don't mind tackling the rebuild. It's no telling how much the 915 will cost, parts and labor. No doubt a built type one won't equal a 915.
I have a gusseted case already, plus a Quaif diff. It's length is another concern. I want to install a 6 cylinder Subaru into my super beetle. So a 5speed bug trans may be my only choice. The engine is a must. O well, thanks all. |
