I am a Loser! Can you help me with something I dropped in the fuel fill?

I do not deserve to own my P Car, WTF was I thinking?? OK, I have a wide mouth funnel but it doesn't open the small flap so Einstein here thought about 'holding' it open with one of my small files, I put lots of tape and stuff on the top so it would not fall in BUT I forgot how brittle they are and a small 1/8" x 3x8" piece broke off and I was told that my friends heard me scream 5 miles away.
Anyway, I have a full shop at home, complete with 2 post lift so I can lift it way up in the air and drain the tank via the plug at the bottom or wait until it gets caught in the fuel pump OR try and put a generic filter somewhere in-line to catch it before....?

No need to tell me how much I suck, I know that.
Thanks

There's a screen on the fuel pickup typically. Or at least something in front of the pump to act as a filter. I'd just leave it until you are ready to drain and re-furb the tank. It won't hurt anything.

When I have to prop open the anti-rollover flap, I prop it open with my biggest flathead screwdriver. Just FYI.

If this is the worst problem you ever have with a Porsche, you will be in great shape.

So, a piece of metal fell into your metal tank? I think you'll be fine.

But, if it helps you sleep at night, you can remove the fuel sender and see if you can eyeball it.
With coat hanger, maybe you can push it towards the bottom drain (or just a magnetic pickup tool to get it?)
You can siphon out the gas when it's 1/4 or less, and pour into another car of yours.

OK guys, I admit I over-react and I am glad I did it here again! Appreciate the feedback. I envisioned it ither plugging a line or ending up who knows where but since it is not a daily driver I will be OK now that I have heard from you.!

When I got my car the fuel level sender had come apart in the tank at some point. While I had the tank out I was able to fish a couple nuts and other small metal bits out with a telescoping magnet. Also got some out by flipping the tank over and having them fall out of the filler neck.

While laying in bed last night I pictured myself strapping on a strong magnet to the bottom of the tank to hold it all in one place, of course I had a few beers last night

It's fine even if a daily driver. It will not interfere with fuel delivery. Maybe if it rusts over the long haul?

Also, you are baring your own neck to folks that have eclipsed your screw-up in days gone by. No need for humility.

Appreciate it, I was really worried last night. All I need to do now is new top, seats and carpet and ready for the road!

I was ice fishing last year. We had a hard time starting a fire to warm us up so I decided to soak some news paper in my snowmobile's gas tank. The newspaper fell in, so did the branch I used to try and get the paper out. Oops! I opted against shoving anything else in there. I rode the sled without issue for 20 miles. When I got home I bought one of those long plunger three prong thing. It worked like a charm.

something else will kick your ass long before that issue. fyi.. I had a sender fall apart years ago, and with a magnet expandable probe was able to retrieve all the parts. but it was probably not worth the effort.

Just pull the fuel sender and pull it out with a magnetic stick.

Leave it till you have to pull the tank or sender for some other reason. The screen will keep it out of the fuel line.

Second on that magnet trick but, I bet you'll be alright if you don't get it out.

Oh man sorry to read your troubles. Well, drive her until empty and text me and I will come over and show you how to remove the filter, probably needs changing anyways after all these years.

With my OCD I could never sleep until I get that sucka out.

Might not hurt to get one of those rare earth magnets welders use and just stick it to the lowest point of your gas tank from the underside.
That said, you really have good access through the sender hole if you want to do some fishing.

At least you didn't drop your dip stick in your oil tank.
You'd be the first to do that!

This all sounds like a few adult sodas were involved....

That takes too long. What, 2 minutes? Who has that time? J/K.

One caveat, gas is super flammable.......be careful not to strike a spark! Kaboom.

Older I get, the more gas scares me.

I once bought a car, and a bolt fell into the engine on the drive home. The guy literally just changed the air filter minutes before I bought the car, and did it wrong. I didn't get my money back.

Feel better ?
