THe nest another update

A new semester and a new girlfriend has slowed my progress a little bit but it’s starting to pick back up. Today I was able to make a (little) progress.
After struggling for 2 hours trying to fit 1 heat exchanger I finally figured it out. For some reason the holes in my post ’75 exhaust system have shrunk and a 13mm socket will not fit inside them. After struggling by sticking my fingers and various wrenches in between the head and HE, I finally figured out that if I tape the 13mm nut to a 12mm socket that I can at least start the nut. It worked and I was able to reach between the head and HE to tighten it.

After getting the left HE and the cat pipe all set to go I tried to attach the cross over pipe to the car pipe.. no go.. It turns out I had taken the right HE and put it on the left side and the left HE has a dent it so that the cross over pipe will fit.

Moral of the story? Use the right HE’s for the right

Isn't that supposed to be a barrel head nut? Don't know the 75 exhaust system off the top off my head, but on my SC, the nuts that are accessed through the holes in the HE's all had barrel nuts and they went on and off easy with a long hex wrench.

hmm.. nope mine are regular 13mm nuts.. but I've got such a hodge podge of a car it's not even funny.. such as the 17mm allen bolt for the tranny fill plug is a normal 17mm bolt. and the bolt for the shifter behind the seats is square, not an allen bolt.

OK, I dug through your old posts and found pics of your heat exchangers.

I dug in the parts list, and it should have socket head barrel nuts for the 6 studs you can access through the holes. The number I have is 999 085 001 02.

Whoever installed the HE's really did it the hard way to save a few bucks.

Man, you are in the middle of things, college, 911, and a cutie. Enjoy it!!

Don't worry you are not necessarily at the peak; later things are great also, just very different, so like the other's said...

Enjoy this time.

Good luck with the exhaust.

Porsche Crest

The holes in the heat exchangers are only supposed to be big enough to have a long 8 mm Allen drive bit fit through them ... at all locations where barrel nuts are supposed to be used. Sounds like you need to get six barrel nuts and a drive bit.

Tim, Heed Warren...Ahhh, to be 21 again. But alas, I'd also want the know-how I've gained since then. Enjoy this...and future times, okay?

I've already got the driver, at least I'm pretty sure I do.. what are the specs on the barrel nuts? I'll pick them up tommarow if I get a chance.

Tim,

Sounds like you're having the time of your life. I take it the photo is in a dorm room? Looks comfortable and does someone have the munchies? Man, if my dorm room looked like that I would have been marching Tours all day every weekend for six months! Of course I was in a military academy. The cool thing was though I could borrow a senior's car (they were the only ones allowed to have cars) on weekends and it was usually a vett, MG, 911, ect. I guess that's where I was first bitten by the Porsche bug!

I'll never forget how shocked I was when my roommate told me that Mustang WASN't a sports car! How little I knew.

Ah, but that was what, some 25 years ago. Alas, I only have 30 or so more years to enjoy my p-car. You hang in there and you may have 50 years of p-car ownership ahead of you.

One hint, establish your career BEFORE starting a family! That way you should be able to hang on to your Porsche!

Good Luck.

HAHA

Brad good advice that's already heeded.. I think that kids before a career can really mess you up, I've seen it happen to too many of my friends.

ohh and yes that's a dorm room and thank god I don't go to a military academy
