Is it just me?
Every time I do this job, the grease goes everywhere but into the bushing. I have the grease gun nozzle engaged on the nipple, but the damn grease just goos all over the nipple and nothing seems to go in. I've tried two different grease guns...same thing happens. Is there some special nozzle I need to make this work?

I've had this problem, it's frustrating. You have to really push the tip on to the grease fitting. Sometimes the tip of the grease gun will interfere with the spring plate cover or something else and not be fully seated, you just can't see it.
What I did is grind down the tip of my grease hose/nozzle to a rounded or conical shape. This really helped a great deal. Of course you have to clean the tip thoroughly and run some grease through it to flush out any particles.

Have you tried swapping out the grease nipple yet? They do seize up, especially if they see a lot of water and dirt.

i have found that even when you get it seated & get the grease through the zirk it all seems to squeeze out right within an 1" so of the fitting. spoke with chuck on this and he pointed out the amount of grease to fill the inner races is so minimal that by the time it daylights outside the joint they are full. id still like to see some grease push out the far side

Could be the grease gun. Most of them are crap these days. I found the John Deere brand to be about the best.

+1 on grinding the nozzle a little for a better angle. I use the rubber flexhose and the small one hand pistol grip gun. With this gun the other hand is free to hold the nozzle tightly on the zerk. Works very well.

Someone should make bushings that do not need grease...

I don't miss the maintenance of the the polybronze I had on my SC.
I like the ER rubber on my 86. Trouble free and most of all dirt free.

Some grease guns or rather the nipple that attaches to the zirk fitting on the bearing- have to be a little loose- that is there's a sheath or tube that screws in and out on the end of the gun-if it's too tight it will look like it seats properly with the zerk, but it doesn't and causes this to happen. You have to loosen and tighten it just enough that there's a little play on the gun end fitting. Not sure if this is the issue but just my observations.

Same polybronze, same problems greasing the fittings. I get the grease in by putting a lot of pressure against the fitting and pumping one handed. Some still comes out around the fitting, but some also makes it into the bushing. Mostly just a hassle and a mess to clean up.
I'll try grinding down the nozzle. I also bought a 'heavy duty' nozzle which works better, but is harder to get on and off the nipple.

I usually grease the fittings with the suspension loaded and then again is a static position with a high quality synthetic grease.
I didn't realize the zerks were removable?
