Tru6 for your plating needs

Hey Folks,

I just wanted to drop a shout out for Shaun at Tru6. Back on August 25th, I stumbled upon a post by Shaun regarding his services for Cleaning, Tumbling, and Plating.

I will attempt to attach the link to the original thread here.

Cleaning, Tumbling, Plating, Polishing, Powder Coating Service

Anyway, since I was nearing the point on our suspension refresh project on our 78 911SC Targa, requiring the services of a plater was necessary. Here is Sacramento, I contacted the only plating service available to see some samples of their plating services. To compare what was averrable I began an email correspondence with Shaun.

I highly recommend that anyone needing any plating services at least make the call or email to Shaun at Tru6 to get his opinion and or quote. He has fantastic communication regarding his work and is very willing to address any questions you may have during the process. I received several email updates from the moment he received the box of goods, his inspection and inventory of parts and items needing to be plated. He went above and beyond assisting me with my project and updating through the entire process. I know that I will be sending any further plating projects to Shaun since he did such a fantastic job. The fact he is a Porsche enthusiast is an added bonus since he knows his way around these great cars and pays attention to the small details that would surly get overlooked at a regular shop.

I sent our items via priority mail and it took two days from California and it was going all the way to Watertown, MA. I can't even get a letter to SoCal in two days so for a package to get to Massachusetts is mind boggling.

Here is some pictures of our plating job along the way.... Take a look at the pictures and you be the judge of the quality of Shaun's work at Tru6. I hope this helps out anyone looking for a good plater to refurbish their hardware.

Cheers Trevor

Here is Shaun's contact info:

I started with the hardware looking like this.

Much of the hardware was in bad shape regarding the zinc protective coating. Utilizing a simple tumbler I got a Harbor Freight, I cleaned the items the best I could. The end result looked like this. I would like to add, that when Shaun received my parts and inspected them, he shot me an email inquiring about the processed I used in cleaning the items. He asked this because when he closely inspected the bolt heads, he noticed that some of the marks left from the forging process had been worn off. Although the tumbler media wore down these marks slightly, the threads were undamaged.

This supports the fact that Shaun just doesn't take the parts and starts the plating process. He inspects each item and notes their condition. I know you usually don't see this kind of attention at a plater. They usually just dump and run because all about quantity over quality.

I bagged everything up, packed it tightly so that the banging around was at a minimum and then shipped it out. Two day later, Shaun had it in hand and immediately notified me that it arrived and that he had inventoried the content.

He made some repairs and alerted me of some issues with a few items. Everything was handled via email so both of us were on the same page.

He then updated me of the project as it progressed and carefully inspected each piece to assure the highest of quality regarding the plating.

In the end, he sent me pictures of the finished product.

In all I was very impressed in the pictures. I couldn't wait to see them first hand. He packed everything up and it arrived in CA taking just two days.

Unpacking to follow....

When I unpacked the box, I was very surprised to find everything individually wrapped. I felt like a kid in Christmas morning..

The pictures do not do this justice. In a single word..."gorgeous"

New washers bagged individually to prevent any mix up.

As I mentioned before, Shaun does fantastic work and I highly recommend anyone needing this service to give him a shout.

Thanks Shaun for doing such a good job. You can expect to get another box of 912 hardware when I begin on that project.

Cheers Trevor

They do look nice.

If you've gone through the trouble to wire wheel and tumble already, just by a plating kit.

I get my chemical from: Plating Kits Electroplating Kits Aluminum Anodizing Kits Gas Tank Sealer Metal Polishing And Buffing Supplies - Caswell Inc

It's a very satisfying part of the fix em up hobby.

Fresh Zinc Yellow Chromate is one of my favorite things. I will keep him in mind for my upcoming 912 resto. Can you give us a ballpark on pricing?

Fixer - is ZYC a home-spun kind of process? Always got the impression it was toxic and tricky.

I don't want to take away from Shawn's great work. It's tricky.

I'll be doing a suspension refresh in the next few months and would like to get everything replated. I have heard that many shops have a minimum fee that takes quite a bit of stuff to make worthwhile. I would be interested in ball park pricing for the parts you had done.

It's a very satisfying part of the fix em up hobby.

I have a good friend that restores 356's for a living who has this kit. I am interested in getting more info on how to do it.

Unfortunately since I am not independently wealthy, a trust fund baby, lottery winner, or in the adult entertainment industry, I still need to work to pay for this hobby. Pulling a 10.5 hour shift on regular days with an 1-1.5 hour commute tacked on each end, time can be sort of short at times.

But I am willing to learn........... Yes, I am that odd ball who took up the challenge to hand stitch a leather cover on our steering wheel and had to do it twice to get it right(sort of), so I am always up to a challenge.

Cheers

Tru6 for your plating needs

Weekend bump:

Just received my second box of plated goodies for our 78 SC. Everything looks fantastic and I highly recommend using Shaun for you plating needs.

He has an eye for the finer details and being a Porsche Enthusiest, he know what things are suppose to look like. Sure beats the heck out of the bulk platers that give you whatever and has a so so finish.

Cheers and happy post tax day, ( US only)

Beautiful work!
I definitely have a fetish for fresh Golden Zinc, specially if it's done correctly.
