i was pissed, then i considered myself lucky as fuch

was backing the car out of the garage and while the carbs popped n crackled into shape with the hand throttle set at around 2k I parked it. got out did a walk around and saw nothing out of the ordinary until I heard a sound that was very unfamiliar. i was already at the back of the car with deck open as I'm still working on getting my webers set right I looked around the passenger side. much to my horror I saw a frying pan sized puddle of oil getting bigger by the heart beat!! I ran around to the driver's side and shut the car off. just a bit slower than my trip to the key I returned to the passenger rear to see what appeared to be a gallon of oil running from under the car! the puddle got big fast. I pushed it into the garage & headed for work...

before I reported to the office I cleaned out the 711 kitty litter supply to stop the driveway title wave of oil. when I came home for lunch there was a trail of oil that had leaked from the car after id stored it under the garage door onto the driveway. what a freaking mess!

during lunch I pulled the passenger rear tire to find this...

I was pissed all morning wondering WTF as until I pulled the tire oil was dripping from everywhere. no duh? the hose that let go was a garden hose of brad penn soaking everything.. when I considered it in total it could not have happened in a better place or time!! I got lucky.

drained 6 qts of oil out of it when I got home tonight and put a fresh 10 qts in after replacing the failed oil line. no more funky sounds, all seems good. except it's still rich on the idle circuit. working up the confidence to shim my floats into spec tomorrow. wish me luck.

all oil relief valves & springs were replaced during a <1000 mile rebuild.

that & 50# of oil soiled kitty litter...

Is that an OEM line or aftermarket?

not sure. came with the car. a 75S with a 79 3.oL motor and a Carrera cooler and lines installed. not an OE thermostat, likely a mocal. had all the lines off bow to stern and flushed them having both the front & on engine cooler cleaned at pac cooler.

new oil tank, all new pressure relief pistons & springs during a recent rebuild.

Yes bullet dodged. Probably change out the other soft oil lines at this point. Peace of mind is priceless. Will the car be at RMG anytime soon. Would love to see it. Mines a 75 Carrera with 3.2 implants!

Were you having any oil pressure related issues or overheating? You should double check.

Wow, good luck it happened where it did.
Now I'm going to need to look at my 5 year old lines...

I had the passenger side factory cam oil line separate at the crimp in the middle while driving at about 50 mph. Looked like arterial bleeding inside the engine compartment when I opened the engine lid. It took ten quarts in maybe 90 seconds of driving until I figured where the odd oil smell was coming from and pulled off the road to raise the engine lid. The cam oil line is very small compared to the oil cooler line. Interestingly, there was no drop in oil pressure. That old faithful oil pump would have pumped it dry before the pressure dropped.

At least that's a little bit reassuring. Gives you a minute to get off the road and shut it down before complete disaster.

the local shop that I got the new oil line from has 3 long time Porsche techs that had never seen this before.

joebob, was your incident on start up? in a snowy environment with cold temps pushing thick, cold 20/50 at start up could be a factor?? it was spring in California here...

Not sure but my guess was a ham handed tow truck guy. DMV screwed up on my registration and left out a number. I was pulled over in NV and the POPO thought it was a bad thing....

In my case the rubber line separated from the crimp. The shop tech (Alpine in Hayden), where I bought a used replacement to get home, showed me where the crimp had been improperly done at the factory, the rubber line not being inserted all the way into the metal fitting before crimping. The crappy part only lasted forty years!

Same kind of thing happened to me on my 72, different hose, but the tire rubbed right trough it. Drove out of my driveway, looked in rear view mirror, saw a trail of oil, turned around, averted disaster. Count your lucky stars.

Possibly not OEM. Was it seeping from there for a long time? Grab the other hoses with some taped up channel locks and if hard replace them. I actually recommend all rubber hoses if age is unknown. These cars aren't getting any younger.

not even a sweaty type of leak was noticed before hand. since the motor is recently rebuilt and reinstalled (<500miles) ive been crawling all over things looking specifically for leaks, loosened fasteners and such. I will be replacing the line from the thermostat to oil tank next time I drain oil.

very lucky, same thing happened to my buddy, pushed the flaming 911 out of his garage where it burned to the ground, +1 on above where every line is replaced, very expensive but way cheaper than new car or worse getting hurt [think oil soaked rear tire(s)]
