Pundits say that the desirable early 911s are the 1965 (because it's the first), certain years of the S, and the 1973 1/2 911T. Nobody mentions the E. Resale prices would tend to confirm the silence, since fine examples can be had for less than $12k.
Nevertheless, Zimmerman's "Used 911 Story" notes that 2.4 liter Es in excellent condition are a rarity, and that a good one would cost a small fortune. Certainly, there are no more nice Es on the road than there are Ses. So what's the scoop? Is the 2.4 liter E at all desirable? |

Yes, the 2.4 E is desirable.
One of the most desirable 911s ever. Its arguably the most useable of all the early 911s. Alex |

The 2.4E is desirable and rare with slightly fewer imported into the US than the S. It seems most US 911 buyers in '72 and '73 ordered the T (Road & Track recommended it). A few dealers ordered S models for their repeat customers, and the E was kind of forgotten as the in-between car. Too bad - it turned out to be as fast to about 90 as the S. 2.4Es are great cars that have developed a following, just not the same interest as the mythical early S - hence they are a good value at this time.

Right now what I desire most about my E is to get the brake fluid out of the floorboard.
But seiously, the car in great. It does not have the aura of an S but also does not carry the bigger price. The performance is great and 95% of the info traded on this board relate to the car. Light weight and good torque are a great combination. tm ------------------ Tom '73 911E, '93 Miata, '76 TR6 Charlotte, NC |

911E?? Talk about one of your best kept secrets.
Prior to owning the '70E, I owned a '72T, a '76S, a '77S, and a '77 930. If I had bought the '70E first, I would have never owned the other cars. There were just not very many of them made. There are some funky things about the early ones that became problems for the owners. Many had Hydropneumatic front struts. These would spring a leak and the next thing you know the front corner of the car would be sitting on the locating arm. They came stock with 14" Fuchs wheels. They had the rev limiter in the bosch distributor located in the rotor. (Just replace it with the vw, and keep your foot out of it) They were fast. The motors developed almost the same amount of torque as an S, however it was in a useable rpm range. Good luck, David Duffield |

wow............i feel special. earlier this year, i purchased a '73 911E with 60K original miles.....a cream puff. i love the car, although MFI was a challenge to figure out. i am glad i waited and looked hard before settling for a car in less desirable condition.
i originally wanted an S, but i couldn't pass up the E when i found it. |

Wait, is this the car I'm thinking about?
![]() If that's the car that belongs to Rick, who's driven with me twice at Willow Springs, then you should sleep extremely well. That is a gorgeous car. The picture above doesn't nearly do it justice. It's a spectacularly clean E, inside and out. Completely unmolested -- worthy of a trip to an R Gruppe meeting, even without any hot rod mods. It's like PWD's 911S -- you stare at it, and you can imagine what it would have been like to be there in 1973 and see one of these fantastic new sportscars rolling off of the showroom floor. Here's another shot of it that Chris Campbell took. Awesome. Thanks for all your input, guys.
So what do you think this car would be worth: 1973 911E Targa. Has been repainted. 38k on rebuilt engine, probably 85k overall. Needs targa top seal replaced, fuel injection adjusted. Otherwise in original condition. |

As always check for rust and bondo, even more so if the car has been repainted. Jim

Prices and valuation varies considerably based on regional markets. Applying averages accross the board does not work, even though some people attempt to do just that! It depends on where the car is located, and how many competitors in the potential list of buyers in the market for an early model there are. If interest is high in the region, obviously the car will be worth more!

Lose the hydropneumatic front suspension and replace it with a normal setup. The front susp. is the main reason why I skipped the E's when they first came out. Now, if it's been replaced, that's another story.

Hydropneumatic front suspension was only 'optional' on '72-'73 models, and I've never driven a '72 or '73 model that had them.
And, contrary to one statement above, no 'E' models EVER got the 14" Fuchs, as they came only in the 5.5" width, and were only used on 911T and 914/6 models. All 911E's came standard with 6" x 15" wheels from day one for the 1969 models! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 10-25-2001).] |

My 2cents,
Love my 73E! Fast and light, even with all it's faults (rusty rockers and worn suspension bushings) it's a trill to drive. All you have heard about its performance and driveability is true. I have recently had the engine rebuilt, my mechanic also had been working on a 73S in beautiful condition (cosmetically and mechanically) and made a point to mention that he still cannot get the "S" to run as nice as my "E" in all respects. The only upgrade I have is the new set of 9.5:1 c/r Pistons (Arias) and SSIs. I highly recommend it if you can get it. Bruno |

Just paid about 8K for a 70 E. Realize that at that price I accepted some amount or future work down the road..(rockers though not horrible will eventually be addressed). As well I will suffer along with an M&M green 911 for some time until the pocket book recovers, then when I do the body work it will become a silver machine...One solic I have is the motor is tight, no leaks, runs VERY strong and I have three years worth or receipts totalling over 17K in maintenance. Have already got a box full of seals, a new dash with no crack, new seals and working an early S front bumper....am having a blast!
This is a great place to learn, these folks have already saved me a fortune in advice and help!! Chris BTW - the Fall foliage in W VA at 500 feet and 500 knots is gorgeous this time of year !! |
