G50 in early car without cutting up body?

I recently heard about installing a G50 in an early car, (74-78) that does not require any body or tunnel modifications. Something about a shorten bell housing.

Does anyone have any details?

Patrick Motorsports does this. Google them.

Current cost: ~$20k minus what you can recoup from the current transmission.

Just build up your 915 with WEVO parts.....I wouldn't buy warm spit from PMS.

I watched a local friend cstreit change from a 915 in his 1970 widebody racecar to a SBH (short bell housing) G50 after his cursed 915 kept letting him down. It's not for the faint of heart in terms of cost. Especially now since the price of a used G50 trans has nearly tripled in the last ten years.

Short list:
  • Donor trans
  • Later style CV axles with 108mm CV joints
  • Shorten bell housing and mainshaft, recut end of shaft for flywheel pilot bearing
  • '87-'89 G50 shifting assembly includes shifter housing, shift rod, shift rod coupler. Or can instead use a Hargett shifter instead of sourcing all the factory G50 shifter pieces from an '87-'89 car.
  • '87-'89 G50 pedal cluster (or a Tilton style set of aftermarket pedals)
  • Use factory '87-'89 G50 brake + clutch fluid reservoir or add a separate small reservoir for the clutch fluid
  • Clutch master cylinder plumbing from pedals to transmission, including slave cylinder
  • Adjustable trans mount
  • Sway bar spacers to allow straight sway bar to clear fatter G50 trans case (or use factory '87-'89 G50 sway bar with "kink" in it)
  • Early '75-'77 930 clutch housing and clutch disc assembly with G50 release bearing
  • '78-'88 930 flywheel.
  • Longer clutch guide tube. Can't recall if this is a 968 guide tube or a 993 RS part.

Agreed Patrick has done this. Adds up real fast when you source a lot of premium priced things from Patrick.

Well I bought a shortened g50 about 10 years ago from them. Big delivery delays but it ended up 6k all in with lsd. Everything was included and correct inc clutch master and slave, fork, new synchros, axles. That transmission has 50+ track days pushing 500+ whp and has been faultless.

I recently asked them to do another and the estimate was 12k. So I had a 915 built for 8k all in...

even Patrick motorsports does not guarantee they wont have to cut the car up- some work, some don't. its a chance you will have to take. it also costs north of $20K for them to do it.

Shorten the bell housing. Send it to California Motorsports for the disassembly and machine work. You will then use an early 930 clutch. It's a tight fit but it will fit, however it will also move the motor back 5/8". I haven't noticed any issues with handling and the corner balance came back great. You will need to make a custom trans mount and a modified engine mount bar to accommodate the 5/8".

Here you go dude. I never went through with it because it didn't make financial sense to me.

Sorry to hear that. They were extremely helpful during my 3.6 conversion.

My experience was very similar.

I installed a PMS shortened G50-01 in an 86 body shell.

It didn't fit - by about 5/8"

I modified the T tube and engine carrier to make the extra space required.

Anyone else have any experience like moving the engine back or other modifications to make thus work without cutting the car apart?

I am planning to get a 930 4sp and have BH shorted to go into my '78 SC/930 conversion.

wish me luck. the modified 930 engine will be just too much for a 915.
