Why does that matter? That's normal.

Is there a typographical error in the range of VINs listed? Should the range of VINs of the 1968 911L Be between 11855001 through 11855134 rather than 11855001 through 11865134? Is the 4th digit in error? Even then the number of units produced (134) does not match Targa68's resource that states 307 units were produced. The 1968 911L Targa listed above the red arrow has an indicated production version 6 with 307 units produced. So what was the difference between production version "5" and "6"? I assume the production version 6 refers to non US vehicles, and 5 refers to US vehicles. And if you look close there is an error in the 1968L Coupe. The starting VINs had 8 digits but by production end they had 9. . . . and the 911S started with 7 VIN digits and ended it's run with 8 digits. That's some strange sauerbraten for you.

More like this. But as usual production numbers will vary from different sources.
Targa L should be xxx6xxxx. 4 mistakes on the same page...

Paternie's book has many errors, and 68 is a year where he really mixes things up. Here's directly from Porsche's own spec books.
A lot of people don't know that the early 68 production got leftover 67 gearboxes. They pretty much all came to the States because the first cars were coming here. You have the 22nd US 911L built.

yours is 1 of 134 US L '68 Targas. 1 of 441 '68 L Targas. 1 of 1672 '68 Targas. Yours is 22nd in the series of 134, but no way to know its position in L targa or all Targa production. No way to know how many soft window, compared to glass. But in '68 the soft window was standard, and glass was an option. My guess is the vast majority of '68 targas were soft window, at least 75% or more. My own is 1180074, 74th in the series of ROW '68 L Targas. I'll have to go look it up, but I think my "production" date is in September, so 74th of one series produced before the 22nd in another series. '68 is a funny year for numbers. Dave,
Is your car a Karmann chassis?

Matt, looks like the 5th digit needs to be 5 for it to be a Karmann chassis.
