Random 964 metal intake thoughts

I've been tossing around the idea of making adapters to mount a metal 964 intake manifold to a 3.0L CIS engine/head. Here are some of them:

1. Cut the stock CIS runners and mate them to the 964 manifold with couplers. Use adapters to run efi injectors.

2. Make flange adapters to mount the 964 intake directly to the heads and have injector bungs welded on to the manifold itself.

3. Avoid the project altogether and just go EFI with a kit like bitz or something diy.

The main benefits I want to achieve using the 964 manifold are mainly from the secondary throttle opening at a pre-determined RPM. I think this might be possible with the addition on a toothed crank gear and a switched rpm output from a controller.

What do you guys think? Thoughts, opinions, real world experience?

-Steve

I am currently working on this very thing, and the CNC information has been put out for estimates for manufacture at the moment. This will be for aluminum adapters to go from the CIS heads to the 964 intake plenum. I am using the plastic version, BTW.

We (the old Supercharging of Knoxville) already had an adapter on the shelf for going from the 3.2 heads to our own manifold (for the high-boost Auto-Rotor kits) but these wouldn't work with the CIS heads because the heads shroud the injector ports. But those were a good jumping-off point for the needed design.

E-mail me and when I get more information (pics of the hardware, etc.) I will let you know.

FWIW,...the plastic version is a much better choice than the metal one.

1) More even flow, cylinder-to-cylinder.

2) Far less heat soak issues.

3) Lighter, too!

^ Yes! Don't use the metal intake unless you are super cash starved. You can get the plastics easily enough people get rid of them when they go to ITBs.

You can't weld injector bungs on a plastic intake. That's why.

I literally want to weld a set of flanges to the bottom of the 964 intake and then weld an injector bung on each of the intake runners.

But I do agree with you both that the 993 intake flows much better. If someone sold intake adapters to mount the 993 intake to the 3.0L head, I'd consider them. The ones previously available from Clewett are NLA (and were $800!!!) and it appears as though you boys at RothSport won't sell them unless you buy the whole shibang. No bueno for the diy crowd.

Check out Rothsport.....they may have info and support for this conversion.....964 plastic manifold to a 3.0
They use ITB's for their spec engines.... but I think they also support 964 throttle body conversions

Hello Steve,

(sorry to hijack OP! See below)

Are the plastic ones that much better with even flow over the aluminum? I'm not as concerned about heat as I am with even flow. Going to do ITB's on a 3.4 based 3.2 with boost.

Not sure if boost "equalizes" the uneveness of the branches or not?

To the OP, I can machine some adapters that will have the injector ports already in them so you can use a plastic intake if you want and not have to fiddle with welding in injectors bungs.

It won't be cheap though. My labor of designing is, but the CNC machine isn't unfortunately at this point.

PM if you're interested.

Clewett used to carry these adapters for 3.6 manifold to 3.0/3.2 conversions...
Rothsport may carry these as well
