Triple A and oil.

Triple A just completed a large study comparing dino oil to synthetic oil. The study showed that the synthetic proved up to 50% better in many tests. I'm not a chemist. Just telling folks about the study. You can find it online.

Report linked at this page:
AAA Spills the Truth on Oil Changes | AAA NewsRoom

Quote:
Research Questions:
1.Are there differences in performance between oils marketed as conventional versus oils marketed as synthetic? a.Quantitatively determined by analysis of multiple ASTM1International (ASTM) standardized tests required for ILSAC GF-5 certification
2.What is the percentage of current model year vehicles that “require” synthetic engine oil?
3.What is the cost increase, if any, associated with switching to a synthetic oil?
4.What are current consumer trends regarding the use of synthetic engine oil?

Key Findings:
1.On average, synthetic oils outperformed conventional oils in the conducted tests by 47 percent. The selected tests evaluated shear stability, deposit formation, volatility, cold-temperature pumpability, oxidation resistance, and oxidation-induced rheological changes.
2.Very few vehicles specifically “require” synthetic oil; however, most vehicle manufacturers require compliance to an internal oil specification for warranty purposes.
3.The average price difference between a conventional and a synthetic oil change is $32 at a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility.
4.44 percent of drivers are either not sure if synthetic motor oil is better for their engine, or do not believe synthetic motor oil is better for their engine.

I believe the list of fully synthetic oils that have enough ZDDP for our cars is exactly one: Mobil 1 15w50 (and I guess Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50?).

I wonder how these results would change for oil change intervals under 5,000 miles. The "recommended" intervals on modern cars is often 15,000 miles...Synthetics for sure have greater longevity.

In the end, oil is comparatively cheap relative to the value of our motors...

BZZZZzz wrong. Brad Penn and my current choice Zrod Amsoil. Step up to the Amsoil racing and the zinc content goes up even more.

Thanks for the tip. Did anyone else get an error message when trying to download the report?
If you found a link that "worked" please post here.

I suspect that that oil is rebadged Castrol. Anyone using it long enough to report findings?

Brad Penn is a semi-synthetic, and it seems Amsoil Z-Rod is 10w30.

Here is a Blackstone report of the Porsche Classic 10w60 with about 1,000ppm of ZDDP:

I'm using Porsche's 10/60 now. Will be sending the used oil to Blackstone in a week or two. Since Porsche's oil is made in Germany I am thinking it is rebadged Liqui Moly 10/60.

sounds like the beginning of another 'oil religion' argument.

I use Mobil-1 15/50 synth in all of my cars but the DE/track car. I use Joe Gibbs HR1 15/50 dino in that as I change it every other event. this stuff has good levels of zddp.

other than having enough zddp, the big issue I hear with synth is it handles high temps and longer change intervals better than dino.

YMMV

I use the oil from my face when traveling to Houston on hot, balmy days.

So who do you believe? A small oil test company or the folks who made our cars? Porsche is not going to make a ton of money on our old cars . I doubt that they would make an oil to try to hurt our motors. Porsche makes most of their money on Suv's. Someday when I get an inheritance I will switch to Porsche Classic 10 60!

Works if you used zinc oxide.

Still no better than bacon fat.

Oil Seal Compatability?

Just asking if there is a study on synthetic oil effects on old natural rubber oil seals, old O-ring compounds, and old "paper" gaskets.

Okay, you win. I'm happy to see there are additional options for these cars.

According to this document, 20w50 Z-ROD phosphorus is 1320ppm and zinc is 1440. I couldn't find a better place to buy it from than Amsoil:

AMSOIL Z-ROD® 20W-50 Synthetic Motor Oil

That document also references Amsoil Premium Protection 20w50 Synthetic Motor Oil with phosphorus at 1266ppm and zinc at 1377ppm...Dunno what the difference is beyond that:

https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/gasoline/premium-protection-20w-50-synthetic-motor-oil/?code=AROQT-EA

One more is Amsoil DOMINATOR 15w50 Synthetic Racing Oil (they love their all-caps):

http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/racing/dominator-15w-50-racing-oil/

1424ppm phosphorus, 1575ppm zinc.

A somewhat limited summary of each oil and their intended use appears at the bottom of this page:

https://www.amsoil.com/newsstand/classic-and-vintage/articles/reduced-zddp-and-wear-protection/
