Removed AC from 88 911, rain gets in engine compartment
Recently removed the AC system from my 88 911. Is there some kind of aftermarket rain shield that attaches under the grill?

No need, even with AC water gets in. Plus you don't want to mess with air flow to your engine that is how she is cooled besides intake.
Oh Yeah, Welcome Aboard.

Let us know if you're having drivability issues stemming from the rain, that could open up another can o' worms

For a short period of time, the VW beetle had a rain tray on the back deck after louvers were added. The tray did an excellent job of keeping the engine clean and rust free. My '70 Beetle has the metal tray which empties water thru two side tubes.
When they came out with the dual port engine, they increased the number of louvers, but did away with the rain tray which caused a mess of the engine compartment. Some say the elimination was due to the need for increased air circulation, but those who have fashioned a rain tray for their dual port Beetles never saw significantly increased engine temperatures. They probably eliminated the steel tray to save $$ during production. You could probably fashion a tray without too much trouble, although I wouldn't hang it tightly against the hood so as to restrict air flow.

You could put the AC back in again. And you could also just not drive in the rain. When I was growing up in So Cal, it was common to see VW Bugs on the side of the road because rain got into the engine area. Some guys would cut up clear plastic bags to cover the vents or engine lid.

No rain shield was used on the 80s 911 Carrera.
If you really wanted one the 912/E water drip pan, 923-512-127-01, might work. |

I took my AC out a couple of years ago. I have the Carrera tail on it wich really scoops up the rain, but never had an issue and I drive my car in the rain on a regular basis. Even sitting in the parking lot during heavy Thunderstorms has never caused any problems.

A rain shield was OEM on my 1980 911SC. It is shown on 803-05, 911 512 109 01, air duct. It is shown as installed thru the 1980 MY and that space is blank on 1984-89 Carreras. I removed it when I installed my aftermarket AC system when I brought the car to the US from Germany in 1987. This rain shield deflected rain water away from the distributor and other electronics along that general line of the engine below the grill. After I removed it and installed the AC, I had some trouble with water in the distributor, causing the car to not start.

What did you do with the leftover holes in the smugglers box? Or did you leave the AC and blower parts in the trunk?
