any tips for driving out pin on clutch helper arm ?

pretty straight forward question

For those of you following my clutch cable saga I had a missing seal above the clutch helper arm go " missing" , water got down and seized the arm on the cross shaft.

got it un-seized, I just need to get the arm off so I can put the seal on and some grease on the shaft . that pin is tight , cant seem to get it to budge. using a steel punch and 5 pound sledge but admittedly cant get much swing action under the car on jack stands, was going over to my buddies lift but just thought id try it first .

Not sure if getting a torch up there is such a good idea but maybe for a few seconds it would be okay ?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I spend probably a day, maybe 2 trying to hammer that pin out while laying under my car. The issue I ran into is that you'd work the pin so far out, then due to the curve of the gearbox for the diff, your punch would be at an awkward angle which would result in your punch just hitting the walls of the hole in the shaft. So I just progressively used shorter and shorter punches until I ran around the house looking for hardened nails to be used as punches.

Hi..no problem using the hammer but you need the space to do it right.Wait until you get to your friends shop. Also use the heat it will help, just don`t melt it together...;-)

I f i remember ..yes you will hit the crossover pipe but do not worry, once you get it going it will go.But remember in your case you can already move the arm so the angle is changeable..

Ice; as you've discovered, that pin is a bi**h! Get the car up on a hoist, use a bit of heat, and give yourself some room to use the hammer. Wear eye protection! I found a flat-ended pin punch, about 4mm, maybe 5mm (it's been a heckuva long time since I did that job) worked best for me (hold the punch with a vise-grip). Use a hammer that is a different material than your punch (steel punch - brass hammer); that will reduce the amount of bounce back.

lol so true Pete .. after an hour or so last night I gave up with it on my jack Stands.

I got myself a nice set of SSIs and a Dansk muffler and old oil style lines. I think I will go to my buddies , take the old exhaust off and that will be the time to get that pin out. While its up on his hoist.

definitely a challenging Job
