Time to use the cavity primer...
![]() It was a little messy... ![]() I know some of you may freak out on this one... But I decided to ditch factory heater tubes for something that I think has a bit more longevity. This is not your standard silicon tube. I actually found this stuff at an aviation supply company. As you can see it is double walled on the inside. It is rated up to 500 degrees. I attached it with some high quality stainless steel hose clamps. I'm sure this will last another 50 years. ![]() ![]() ![]() Finally, I'm caught up with my postings... this is where I stand as of today. Next step, install the inner rocker panel. ![]() ![]()

Thanks TxGerman for the nice comments. Determination is right. I have wanted to quit this project so many times... I just keep telling myself that I will be done before I know it... My near term goal is to get primer on everything... I feel like I'm getting close.

Once again , good work Rodney .
Would dipping not have totally destroyed the hoses ? I was told by my local stripping place that all aluminium had to be removed from car as there will be a charge for contamination of the acid bath . Quote:

Rodney, you've become quite the craftsman with sheet steel.
Your determination and perseverance is worthy of more kudos than I can type. Very very well done, sir.

Hi Ian,
I'm not sure what it exactly did to the heat tubes. The inside of tube seemed to just be a weird mesh, then some insulation, then the aluminum covered in paper. Yeah, I would think it would have eaten everything... but I guess not? The stripping company had no idea that there was a heat tube in the rockers. I really don't know the history of this 911. I'm thinking at some point due to the dusty nature of everything before I took it to the stripper that it was definitely sitting rotting away in some outside dirt lot. Somehow all of the debris ended up in the cavities. Not sure if there was debris in there from dirty dipping solution or if there was dirt from sitting outside that mixed with the dipping solution? Thanks, Rodney

You won't be the only one. We see it and the work you're doing is awesome. Really inspiring to see someone just dive in and do it. Gives me confidence that I could do the same thing on my SC.

Cool you got the rockers sorted, it must seem like rust repairs are endless on these early cars. My heater tubes were actually in OK shape so we reused them… ![]() Excited to see you getting closer to the end! Best, Jan |

Check out this picture of one of the heater tubes... I wonder if there is suppose to be a inner tube or is it just this mesh? When I took the first one out it just broke in half. ![]()

That’s just a muffler so you can pipe engine sounds into the cabin like they do on the mustang

Well that is what I was thinking. Everyone calls them heater tubes but it is really a muffler. Well, we are going to find out if it really makes a difference because I'm not using them. Thanks, Rodney

Rodney,
you're making great progress. Good job. The insulation around the heater tube looks to be sound and vibration control, but my guess is mostly sound attenuation. It's one of those items that Porsche spent time to change the surfaces while maintaining the air movement, they must have had a reason for all that. How loud is the engine noise coming thru a hard tube surface ? - you'll find out when you open the heater when it's all done. If the heater is never opened, you'll never know what difference there is. We missed you posting for a while - glad to see you posting again. |

I assume that general ambient temperatures are a factor how quickly these disintegrate, in your case the dipping bath certainly did not help their integrity. ![]() Let’s see what a difference in noise your rubber tubes will make or not.. Cheers, Jan |

Hi Jan, I have never noticed an increase in noise in any of my 911s when I open up the heat valves. Have you? I have had two 71s, and a '72 prior to this '72. And two SCs. I have thought about this, what if it is too loud. Well, I will tear back the carpet and simply cut out the inside the car portion of the rocker for instant access. I could then replace the tube and weld it back up. Not too big of a deal since it would be from the inside and I would not have to mess with the inner and outer rockers and paint. Thanks, Rodney

With the air blowing through at fart pressure , I doubt you hear any surface noises ....
Makes me wanna go see the difference on my 93 with engine bay blower , I’ll buy a cheap Amazon cell-phone boroscope as now I’m intrigued .... |

I was also thinking more about this. Now, I'm no acoustical engineer but I would assume that the sound from the hard pipe would be traveling straight right to the other side, so there would really be no reduction in noise. Typically, for noise reduction you have multiple bends or mesh or flat surfaces for the noise to bounce off of. There is none of that with the heat tube because it goes perfectly straight, you can see right down the line. Also, if it was a big issue I would assume that the heat tubes would not get rid of all of the noise meaning that we would still notice some increase in noise when we turned on the heater, and again, I have never heard any difference. Once I get an engine in my car and this project done we could probably do some comparisons with like engines and exhaust setups to see if there is any difference. Thanks, Rodney
