Just bought a project 1972 911T

Hi Pelicans!

I am finally back in the game! I have not had a Porsche since my '82 SC that I sold in 2005. My favorite year is the '72 for obvious reasons so I decided to lose my mind on this '72 project with a Subaru engine. Don't worry, it is coming out as soon as it enters my garage. It has a 915 trans but no Porsche engine. Seems to be missing a lot of parts but not everything. Some holes, but minimal rust if any. The big part will be figuring out what to do with the front quarters. I it to be a long hood...well because it is a long hood! Do I buy fiberglass, weld in turn signal brackets in what I have, or buy new/used long hood quarters. Same with hood. For the back and front bumpers I'll probably go with a fiberglass RS bumper. Maybe an S bumper up front metal standard in back. I'm not sure what flares are on there right now, how can I get an accurate measurement? Has a fuel cell, not sure what brand, most likely I'll get an original. Comes with new seats, but not Porsche so I will sell them. Not sure of the original color so I guess the only way to find out for sure is to get a COA. He thinks it was a bright green. I'm hoping Viper Green. None the less, I will most likely paint it Viper Green or Tangerine, my two favorite colors. I'm planning to do a lot of the work myself.

Congrats Rodney! That looks like a great project. Instead of Viper Green, you might want to consider Condo Green. Whatever you choose, it's going to be fun when you're finished!

Hi Jim, I definitely need to investigate Conda Green. Isnt it a little duller in color? Like pastel almost?

Looks like a fun project and a solid foundation to start with.

Congrats on bringing it back to its aircooled origins.

Looks like the rear flairs are SC. I'd keep them if they are steel and if they were installed well.

As far as the front goes, I'm guessing that weld on turn signal mounts would be the way to go, unless you can get a deal on some used long hood fenders. I would personally be temped to go with FG fenders, but that is a personal choice. Quality FG or CF is an acceptable alternative IMO as long as you are not going for authenticity or a concourse car.

I guess some of your decisions will be determined by your long term plans for the car. If you want to get top dollar when you are done, or keep the car. Track oriented or show car or something inbetween.

Hi Rodney,

congrats on the car. I considered it myself so I have at least 1 valuable info for you.
The car's original color is blue metallic (color code 324), a fantastic and rare special order color of the period.

Upside of the SC rear fender arch line is that it could be transformed into the RS layout. Downside is that not a single 73 RS was built in that color (probably because IMHO it does not match the shape at all).

My idea would have been to make it a sleeper car, all stock on the outside with a 2.7 RS+ spec magnesium engine. 915 5-speed gearbox is in the car.

Thanks for the info. How did you find out the color code? I am going to order a COA shortly. The seller told me he was not sure of the original color and thought it might be a tourquoise or bright green.

The hard part for me on this car is that it needs all new front panels on the front. I might consider the weld in turn signal assemblies versus buying replacement early fenders.

glad to help - I had this thought through quite far. ;-)
You can find the color code tag on the lower left A pillar of the car, it says "324 9-3".

This is the color: Paint codes for 1970 84 Blue Metallic
I truely suggest to keep it, it will be a very elegant car. Viper green is also great, but something different (my 72 viper green is now almost finished).

Indeed, the front will need a lot of attention. From what I can see, the front slam panel was altered to G body style as well as the battery setup. Hence my assumption that front inner fenders will require reconstruction, incl. battery boxes.

Regarding fenders, I would check them for rust. The indicator / horn grill area is quite tricky in terms of fitment, even with new parts. The new genuine front fenders are a much better fit than old original ones. Saves time and money, hence my recommendation over old originals or Dansk JP stuff.

The rest of the body looks pretty nice, rear seat areas have been repaired so-so previously. The rear slam panel should be saveable, sans the G body light rail.

Oh, and the front sway bar was replaced at some point by a later-type setup. The 72 oil system is missing but this is pretty much available new (tank, oil lines), only rare thing is the oil filter console (throw in new seals and aluminum sealing rings).

What kind of an engine do you have in mind?

Did you get to see it in person? Unfortunately I did not. Still waiting as we are having difficulty getting it shipped, hopefully it will leave this week.

Unfortunately I'm going to be learning from the ground up when it comes to restoring this '72. Although I have had the pleasure of owning a few long hoods I've really only done mid-level wrenching on them. So, I am willing to absorb as much info as I can. I will need help creating the action plan if you will, where to start first.

So you think I should go all steel? It seems that everyone complains about the fitment when it comes to fiberglass. I think I will most likely go fiberglass front and rear bumpers though. Steel fenders, hood, and decklid.

Speaking of colors, I do have this... That Metallic Blue is nice, on the brochure it is very metallic looking. Hard to tell in the pics. But the blue in the link that you sent me is really nice looking.

Agh, that would suck if it was a full clip replacement. It is not a salvage title so I was hoping nothing that major was done. I know a lot of guys will remove the battery boxes but I doubt update fuse panel. I do notice that now looks like fuse panel of later model is on there similar to an SC.
