Catalytic Converter needed or required?
All,
I am seriously looking at a 1985 -911 Coupe. The car had it Catalytic Converter removed by it's 2nd owner and cannot be found by it's current owner(#3). I live in SC , so there are no emissions testing, vehicle inspections, etc. By going through with the deal-I do not see any issue (no state law or smog testing) -but let me know any repercussions to the car performance by not having one, pretty sure there is none-just wanted to pass it by this group. Thanks |

It will be louder and it will smell a bit.

It will smell a lot. And you will be contributing to the warming climate but hey, you don't live in a flood zone so you won't be paying the price of a flood. The Miami and Houston people will.

It does not smell a lot. The car will smell like an air cooled 911 should. The car will definitely be louder.
And Charleston is definitely in a flood zone. There is a reason it is called the "Low Country".

For whatever it's worth, I put a 100-cell Dansk cat on my 87. The car runs much better than it did with the original cat. No gas smell.

My 911 hasn't had a cat on it for years. I don't notice a heavy smell, but you can always find another one used and slap it on there very easily. And Charleston is definitely a flood zone...

I've been running a "gutted cat" (long story on that) for years on my '82 SC that has a functioning Lambda system/O2 sensor with the CIS tuned to 0.9 CO as per spec and it's no more noxious than one with a cat. Louder, probably.

Any car enthusiast that says a car "smells" once doing a performance modification should find another hobby. smells like burnt hydrocarbons which is flower scent to my nose.
BTW i have a bypass and M&K single in single out, Love it and really opened up the top end RPM band! |

It smells a little self-righteous in here. Pretty easy to run the car with or without cat. Definite performance boost and will add a bit to the gas smell of the exhaust.

I never noticed anything performance or smell wise by removing my damaged old one from my 87 and replaced with M&K Pre-Muffler. Just a bit more space by the left rear wheel. It is definitely louder.
Our cars are not "ULEV's" by anyone's imagination. We're also such a small group driving so few miles we should be ignored.

It does not smell bad if you are the driver. But, everybody else behind you will disagree.

The amount of pollution that every car has put out in the entire world, since cars were invented... equals to about .00012% of the earth's ozone layer. Or to put it in layman's terms... if you took ALL the pollution from every single car and directed it at the same exact spot in the very upper atmosphere... it could create a hole the size of... a marble. A very small marble. If you don't believe me... look it up... "Vehicle emissions contain few chlorine- or bromine-heavy substances, and therefore have little effect on ozone depletion"

I don't have a catalytic converter in my car and it smells. I don't mind it but other people might disagree, especially people who don't know too much about cars but think they do.

It certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if the rest of the PPI is good. You can always install one if desired.

Jack - absolutely it's not a deal breaker at all- just wanted input as to its impact if not equipped, the available of them is found on all major Porsche online sites.

And you keep believing that until you ask yourself why they invented it in the first place?
