Oil Level Sender wire colour, save my sanity
911 Coupe 2.7 1976 Sportomatic, UK delivered, RHD.
1975 built, 1976 model. So I have a bunch of current flow diagrams & wiring diagrams that cover 1976 911 USA & Euro and all identify the oil level sender signal wire (The one with the rubber cover) as being a Green/White wire and the earth wire as a White however, my 76 signal wire is White/Red with a an earth wire that is White all looking very original ! Plot thickens if you look for a spare cable assembly on the internet 91161203901 any images that I can see have a White/Red or Red sender signal wire and White earth (Same/Similar to mine). Why is this important ? I'm about to embark on the complete reassembly of the car as the body shell comes out of painting in the next week or so the area I am most concerned about is the reinstallation of the cable harnesses, so thought I'd make sure I have the correct wiring diagram for my car, as I was cleaning my original 91161203901 cable assembly at the time I thought this would be a good item to check against the diagrams..........first thing I check I have a problem ! So now I have doubts about my wiring diagrams or am I missing something ? Your thoughts much appreciated. Mark |

Are you looking at the cloth covered wires coming from the rear light fixture harness?
They are not color coded like the rest of the harnesses. The green/white wire is in the through body harness starting at the rear small 6 pin connector and ending behind the dash gauges. Hope that helps.

Dennis,
Thanks for the speedy response Yes the 2 wires inside the white ~5mm ID heat resistant sleeving. If I understand correctly, you are advising that although the wire diagrams show Green/white cable connected to the actual oil level sender unit this is not actually true ? Just my luck picking this as an example ! Note: The other wires in this RH rear light cluster harness seem to follow the wiring diagram, just not the Oil Level Sender signal wire ! I wonder why this wire would be treated differently ? Cheers Mark T |

because it is making contact with the (sometimes very hot) oil tank.

Maybe it's something to do with the harness being dual use part i.e. L & R rear lighting with both fog light & oil level sender wiring included . !? Cheers Mark |

I took a quick look at the 84 diagram as my 76 diagram doesnt list color. the 84 confirms the change from GN/WT to WT/RE at the sensor harness connector.

Many thanks, the 76 diagrams I have do not show the transition of colour change either side of the connector, the 84 diagram has more detail in this area. Mystery solved.
What a great forum Mark. |
