Toe Adjust Techniquest
Guys (and ladies, of course), can someone direct me to a good technique for assessing how much toe-in or toe-out I've got. I'm going to check that tonight in my garage and I wonder if a couple of pieces of lumber (straight as I can determine) can be tied to the wheel/tire to see what kind of toe geometery I've got.

Oh, c'mon. Somebody's got to know how to do this in their garage.

I used this before. Worked great!

Superman, I have heard of people using a stick of metal conduit, placing it in front of the wheels, marking the outer most edge of the tire, then doing this to the rear. Then they measure the differences and do some math to figure out the toe.
There's also an articl on theTechnical how to page here at Pelican. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/home_toe_in/home_toe_in.htm |
Awesome. Just what I was looking for.

similar to the method in the link is to use a tack with a string and a small weight of some sort (like a plumbob (sp)) hang the tack off of the extreme rear of the tire (both sides at the same time) mark the spot on the ground, then push the car forward until the string is hanging off of the extreme front of the tire and then mark that spot on the ground. You then just measure the difference between the two marks and that is your toe.

Hey, I want it too!!!

I like to spin the tires while on a jack and draw a line with pointed chaulk arond the whole tire right in the center of the tread. Lowere the car and roll it back and forth to set the suspension bouncing the car a little. With two people, measure the front and back distances between lines w/o any movement in between measurements. The difference is your toe. This method is compromised a little on a p-car as you cannot get the tape across from tire to tire at the extreme back and front of tire. So your toe is actually a kittle more than you read. Works great on some cars, not so good on others, but I think it is a good method to know about.
