Exhaust swap

How easy or difficult is it to swap out stock heat exchangers and cat and muffler, to install a SSI setup with 2 in 2 out? Or even better yet, install tuned headers....need to be able to go back and forth every couple of years Is it worth the time and effort? This would be for an SC (stock) otherwise. I need input because I'm about to pull the trigger on a setup but want to be sure I'm choosing what is best for me. I don't really care about cabin heat as when I drive its going to be warm anyway

Depends. If you have a lift and keep the fasteners greased with high heat anti seize, not hard at all.

The first time might be tough, assume that the nuts are seized to the studs. After that every couple of years should be easy peezy if you use anti seize on the threads.

I already removed the Cat and Muffler.....it was simple even without a lift. You think its worth doing it?...should I go headers or SSI setup if so? I only ask because I'm wondering if a premuffler and single in dual out will get me close enough.

Don't rule out cabin heat. You may find it helpful for defrost capability. Otherwise, what's the goal here?

If you aren't worried about heat, then there are several headers that are much less expensive than SSI exchangers. I've been very happy with a set of the generic stainless headers seen all around the net and offered by our sponsor.

Yeah I know it sounds a little bit crazy since the 3.0 is not exactly a race car engine set up stock however the end goal is lose some weight better looks better tone

I removed my stock muffler, cats, heat, to lose weight and gain sound and better looks, so not so crazy in my opinion. I added the stainless headers and M&K muffler. The weight loss was noticeable even with my stock SC 3.0.

Nice! That's what I'm considering doing...were the headers tuned for you? Do you get drone with that setup?

Have a 3.0 deleted the cat and went to SSIs and Dansk Sport. And like the gentleman below, I also backdated the heat, and lost a bit more weight. Lettuce summarize today's discussion: Lost a ton of weight, gained a great exhaust note and kept the heat. Yes, you can have it all.

Doesn't sound crazy at all. It's a nice upgrade. I'd just say again that having defrost could really come in handy unless you never drive when conditions for a foggy window are present. I backdated my heat and only have defrost, no blowers or other plumbing. Toasty and clear windshield.

You'll be pleased either way.

So my next question is .....does changing out the exhaust throw a check engine light with the cat delete on the SCs? Is this something that can be fixed by simply by tuning it?

I have done the swapping on two of my cars for smog compliance every 2 years. I can tell you that I am getting kind of tired of it.....

So when adding up the cost of doing SSi's and adding the sport muffler....I start wondering about the cost to benefit ratio. It seems like a great idea but is the cost to benefit worth it in your opinion? Is changing out the stock SC exhaust set up for the SSI's and muffler a wise investment if looking for a performance boost? Will the difference be noticeable?.....I'm leaning towards possibly saving the dollars on this and directing those funds towards other suspension (torsion bars, shocks, bushings, etc) and brake stuff. Please weigh in if your out there and have experience with this upgrade. Everything is off the car at this point and its ready to go so I need to decide what to do. Was thinking of just cleaning everything up polishing and going back stock if there's not much performance gain.

No check engine light from deleting the cat. That's a post 1996 OBD II thing.

I have an issue with the cost as well, but I really wanted heat.

My solution was to find a decent set of 74 and earlier heat exchangers. Dimensionally, they are the same and offer the same performance gains as the SSIs.

here in colorado they've now deployed mobile emission sniffers -- I drive by one every day on the way to work in my '86 carrera -- since my exhaust is still stock, it was a good deal for me as I fast passed my bi-annual emissions test without having to go to an emissions testing station. However, I know of others who have removed cats, etc. that have been flagged by these mobile sniffers as gross polluters. Surprised if Kalifornia hasn't yet adopted a similar practice.

Very curious how these work...
