Source for a ZF LSD (915)?
Anyone know a current source for a ZF LSD to fit a 915 gearbox (1973)? Any condition. Thanks.
I think the P/N is 901.332.053.13 but not positive. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507764865.jpg |
The problem isn't acquiring the LSD, the real issue is getting the special LSD flanges needed for those coarse-spline units. Just unobtanium now.
|
Ahh, wasn't aware of that. So perhaps I should just put in an OSG unit? No axle/spline changes required? Only for normal road use.
|
The OSGs are $$$$ aren't they? Have you looked at the Guard options?
|
I found this recent thread to be both topical and illustrative http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/973545-should-i-put-guard-lsd-2-2-a.html

If you MUST have a ZF, I've probably got the last new ZF 915 housing in existence. I'd have to build it with Guard internals, but that would allow you to use your standard flanges. Not cheap. PM me.

.
OSGs are cheaper, but you pretty much get what you pay for .. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1683603.jpg |

This seems like a no-go scenario. I don't want to change the gearbox or do anything custom...just add the factory LSD option. :(
Wish it was like sticking a locking diff in the old landrover. Turn a few bolts and presto. |

I have coarse splined ZF LSD in my 915 that is undergoing a complete rebuild at the moment, could replicate the flanges if they are in such a high demand? I can make a drawing at least, just a bit of Solidworks. |

The key will be making good, relaible parts. :) :) |
I will make the drawing before gearbox gets assembled just in case I may need it some time.
We have made quite a few parts just by making a good drawing and then just have them CNC milled from preferred metal. |

I wouldn't consider barstock / "billet" equivalent to a forging for a part like this even if you find the same alloy. It's not the kind of part you can get from just any machine shop, especially in small quantities. |
For quite a while now a used early 915/914 lsd has been around $1500-2000. The flanges are generally $400-500 each. So $2300-3000. A Guard LSD which does NOT require flanges runs $2595. Unless flanges can be made for less than $400 each there's no point.

I know it is not just cut out and done, it has treated surfaces etc. I consulted with specialists, they said it can be done though. |
Just to add information for people, the LSD flanges are 61mm to the shoulder, versus 56mm. That's the sole difference
|
So we're talking coarse flanges with CV "cups" that are 4-bolt (the other two are roll pins) and 108mm diameter?
What if wicks decided to swap axles and install the 100mm axles? Of course he'd also need the associated transmission drive flanges and the stub axles. Only reason I say this is because the 100mm axles are quite plentiful used, as are the flanges and axles. |

Well if he replaces the output flanges when he does the replacment diff, he doesn't need the coarse 100mm flanges? That said, I have two sets of the coarse 100mm flanges. I don't know if that means they're rare or common though. Just saying I personally have two.
One set came in the racecar as-bought, which started as a '79 SC but has an '84 915 transmission. Apparently the original '79 SC output flanges were transferred into the '84 trans with the billet LSD it has in it. I think it's one of the early GT billet diffs. The other pair are from a friend's '79 SC, coincidentally, that had a problem with the trans and he needed to replace it. His trans had an open diff. So now that I think about it, I should take a look at the two pair of flanges and see if they're the same dimensions, just to educate myself |
