Brass Oil Cooler / Fan questions
In an effort to keep things cool, I finally just took the time to scrub my brass oil cooler on my '84.
At some point, it appears that someone did some paint work and didn't bother to cover it up. Not only was it layered with dirt, but there was lotsa paint underneath the dirt ![]() It's nice and shiny now (definitely must've cost a lot to make this thing back in the day). I drive in lotsa traffic with AC. It's mostly in the 80s year round here in Los Angeles. Yes I've read ad nauseam all the different oil cooler threads...But i still have a few questions for those that have the brass cooler and decided to install a fan. I'm not looking to add a Carrera cooler or Elephant, etc... I want to use what I have. 1. What Spal fan should I go for? 6.5"? 2. Can I mount the fan behind the 28 row brass cooler instead of relocating the horns and putting it on in front? There seems to be more than enough room and tire clearance if mounted from behind. 3. Push or pull? 4. I want it to be manually activated only. I also want to mount the switch by the gauges. I can feel a hole underneath the vinyl. It seems to be the same size as the sunroof switch. Can I buy, mount & use another sunroof switch for the fan? Or is there another Porsche switch that will fit? ...I'm gonna zip-tie the fan directly to the cooler to save space. I bet most folks don't have a brass cooler, let alone modded one with a fan. Hopefully there's someone who can help me not go in without a parachute. Cheers ![]() |

Dang, I had forgotten to measure the space btwn tire and cooler with the wheel turned inwards... Not enough room to fit the 6.5" Spal fan (it's 2.05" thick and approx. 7" in width).
So looks like I will have to relocate the horns and put a push fan in their place. Has anyone done this setup in this manner with the brass cooler? |

Don't know anyone who has used a fan with the 28 tube brass cooler, but I can't help but think it would help. The brass oil cooler is supposed to work mostly like a heat sink and didn't come with a fan. I have a brass oil cooler with my 2.7L and it seems to be OK without a fan.

Pelican Parts - European Automotive Parts and Accessories - Porsche • BMW • Mercedes • Volkswagen • Audi • Saab • Volvo • MINI or you could use this Dorman 85915 switch which can be wired so it lights up when turned on. https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/dorman-conduct-tite-3354/lighting---electrical-16777/switches---rocker--universal--18222/rocker-switch/85915/4176913 In either case, be sure to wire it to control the ground to a fan control relay. You can use a spare "round relay" position in your standard relay block. I used the Dorman switch on my car with a Carrera cooler and fan.

I installed a 28-row in place of the original trombone but without the fan (temps here not that bad). It is a pretty cool item, but I agree the fan is a must in LA traffic, and I guess you already know the Carrera setup is really what you need...
Horns: Look for the Hella round horns in paired two tone and perform a custom mount for them - great sound and effect plus they come in colors now (see any Subaru performance shop). Note rear wiper switch outlet covered by vinyl just under (is it?) speedo - press vinyl in slightly to find the opening - you may actually have two. Porsche makes the switch you need (wiper or similar) and it goes in just fine as an Off/On switch. Decide now where you want to fuse this fan, maybe at this switch, under the dash? Zip ties let you mount the fan and fool around with it before final solid mounting of your choice.
