Trouble installing motor mounts
I have a 1984 911 and am in the process of replacing the alloy race motor mounts in the car with the stock rubber kind.
I had some problems with the installation though and can't get it to work... After removing the solid motor mount, I can't get the main securing bolt that goes through the motor mount to reach the threads on the brace below. It seems that the brace receiver lowers a few millimeters after the mount has been removed and is too low for the rubber mounted bolt to reach. I did support the engine with a jack underneath as suggested and the engine does not appear to move with the mount removed. Am I supporting the engine too high with my jack perhaps? Please let me know if any of y'all know of a cure for my problem. Mahalo in advance! Steve |

When the motor is jacked up it will normally cause the crossbrace to actually touch the bottom of the motor mounts. Perhaps something is keeping your motor from rising?

when I installed mine, I had to jack the motor up an extra 1" or so to get the new motor mounts in( to line up the bolts).

The mounts on the engine sheet metal usually bind to the screws holding them. If you had some difficulty when first trying to remove them, the mounts will twist to some degree and then generally release, leaving them in a different position. If not you, them possible another previous owner has done this. This happened to my 89 and my brothers 87 when removing, so I would think it is common. If this is the problem, it may be the misalignment that is stoping you from threading the bolt. On mine, I was able to loosen the smaller bolts on the engine mounts first and then thread the larger support bolt. After, I tightened all of them up. Hope this may help.

When changing the rear mounts do you have to remove the transmission mounts or can the rear be lowered a little, the mounts replaced and then raised again and secured?
Thanks Chris 73 911 E |
