I used Mobil 1 Vtwin, Valvoline Vr1, etc etc I wanted to like Brad Penn. Hell, it's a lot cheaper than Mobil 1. Well, first off my car drips a lot with Brad Penn. It doesn't drip a drop (seriously) with the other oils I've tried. Yes my car is stupidly superbly maintained. Yes this includes a full engine rebuild and upgrade a few years ago. Yes I'm totally OCD crazy with my maintenance. Yes yes yes ... ![]() Brad Penn, you do not mix with SoCal summers at all. Seriously I'm annoyed at how you don't cool much of anything at all. This is a rhetorical post. Just my opinions after running Brad Penn twice. Fairly warm weather? Wanna use the AC? Close to daily driving? Forget it. FWY bandits don't apply. Everything runs cooler at 70. Again, if you love Brad Penn, ok happy that you don't drive much and you live in a cool climate. Great! Los Angeles is a big hot city, and is nothing like the cool green tree-lined roads in Nowheresville USA. Time to go back to V-Twin or VR1 etc PS. No offense to the Brad Penn crew. I'm just not buying it anymore Last edited by Koizumi; 07-10-2017 at 04:26 PM.. |

Hi, yes I've always been running 20w50 oils in my 911. I understand opinions are subjective but these are my observations/conclusions.

AutoZone screwed up their barcode/ pricing on VR1 back in March. Purchased multiple cases at $2.99/qt. Haven't dripped a drop.

A couple of years back, I switched from BP to VR1. I noticed the valve train was quieter. No other things to note, but it is still quieter.

You should find the oil you like. But as a data point, I've been using Brad Penn in Southern California for a LONG time (maybe a decade?). I've had no issues with it whatsoever.

I just tried Brad Penn this fill up and it appears that I'm leaking much less than Mobil 1. Temps seem to be similar.

Brad Penn and Turbos don't mix. A number of us on the 930 board observed a lot of ash/coke in our engines after using it.

I wouldn't use it in my lawnmower.

Hopefully nothing began impeding your cooling circuit during the first change Confirmation will be good data point On my own car, in 90 degree weather sitting in traffic, my temp would jump from 180 to 210, but then my thermostat to my auxiliary cooler would open up and it would come back down to 180.

It's important to note that I drive a lot of stop & go in fairly heavy traffic. I use the AC as well (not all of the time but often). These 2 bits of criteria have consistently been paired with all of the different oils I've used since 2011. Cruising on a Sunday AM is not the anecdote I'm trying to share here... I'm talking about real world summer driving in our beloved air, or rather, oil cooled car ![]() Certainly AC use has a massive impact upon the cooling factor of oil used; however, it is interesting to note that Brad Penn is inordinately less cooling by an extreme amount versus any other 20w50 oil, be it synthetic, partial dino or full dino that I've used... AC or not! Last edited by Koizumi; 07-11-2017 at 05:32 PM.. |

![]() ![]() I'm sticking with penn grade 20-50. plus, with a cat in place the penn grade is not suggested. it's for racing, not sitting in traffic with the AC on....

			Hi all,

Just a quick follow-up now that it's been a week since I've changed the oil back to VR1. Utilizing the same factors as before, my oil temps are back to normal 'cooler' ranges. Perhaps my car just doesn't like Brad Penn. Anyhow, fill with what you like... I'm sticking with VR1 Cheers |

On the BP dump, how was the oil plugs? Any metal shavings? BP and VR1 sure sounds different in the engine, no?

Good question, I shoulda mentioned this...

The BP was clean, no shavings at all. It appeared the same as a while back when I drained another tank of BP. Of course it didn't have the cool greenish color anymore though ![]() So far, VR1 sounds a little quieter than the BP but it's really just a slight difference. My car is definitely running cooler (this was my primary concern with our scorching LA weather right now). |

Really trying not to sound like a noob, but in looking at your posted pic of the temp gauge, the last time our 78 SC ran in warm weather it was right there. Is this considered an unacceptable temp for our flat six air cooled engines? I have also felt that I wanted cooler oil tempts but figured the age and mileage determined all.

Valve covers. It's time to change the gaskets again. Wish I had identified the culprit prior to changing the oil. After some thought, I realized that the last time I changed them was during a rebuild back in 2011.
