How to use Techron correctly?
 

Did a search on Techron and while i am convinced that this stuff works, there seems to be a wide variety of application methods. From dump it into an almost empty tank and drive like hell to just add it to the tank before an oil change.

How do you use it and have you had good results?
Would using Chevron gas regularly negate the use of Techron?

I dump it into an empty tank and then fill it up and I've had great results.

I was having a hot start problem and was ready to replace the fuel pump check valve when I gave Techron a shot. My hot start problems went away with the frist tank.

I haven't been using Chevron gas; in Hawaii it's about 40 cents a gallon more expensive than the same octane gas at Costco.

Use the recommended amount depending upon the 12 oz or 20 oz size. I ususally go a bit overboard, 20 oz should work for a 1/2 tank for proper strength. Then repeat. Do this ideally before an oil change...not after.

I don't understand why I constantly see warnings on this BBS about using Techtron before an oil change. What is the scoop on this poop! I have used Techtron on all my cars for years with no problem and I don't change my oil after using it. Sounds like an old wives tale to me. Does anyone have any concrete proof or is it all just a feeling that a shot of Techtron is no good for your oil?

I belive the caution stems from the fact that Techron is such a good solvent. If there is any chance of it getting into the oil via blowby or whatever, it's just listed as a general caution to be a better deal just before an oil change..."just to be safe".
In real life, I've not been too concerned in my normal every-day cars..and they're both approaching 200k miles...so I guess it didn't hurt.

I think people only change the oil if they are using high concentrations of it. I dump a bottle at a little before a half tank and drive the car like hell for an hour. At this concentration, I'm not sure if it's all burning up.
Better safe I guess. Someone on this board did some testing I do believe.

Is Costco "gas" gasahol? Many states, especially if run by the liberals, give a substantial tax advantage to gasahol. Here ARCO brand gas is heavily laden with alcohol, and usually sells for 15-20 cents less than other brands. I chuckle, seeing folks lined up to buy at these stations, when actually they aren't saving much, since gasahol usually delivers 10-15% LESS gas mileage than straight gasoline.

I do one 20oz bottle then fill the tank. When the tank is done, I change the oil. You can smell the stuff in the oil. While concentrations might be low, what does it hurt to just do Techron every 3K and dump the oil? I think any additives like that will affect the ability of the oil to do its job.

Their are two Techron products out there, are you guys refering to the fuel additive or the fuel injector cleaner?
I only use the fule injector cleaner every other tank full.. seems to work fine for me and my Baby..

I used the concentrate a couple of times before oil changes per the advice on this board and never really thought about why, now I'm wondering why. :confused:

20 oz. of anything disolved in a tank of gas would not make fuel wind up in oil if that were not already occuring, ie. a non-firing cylinder, etc. AND, it would have to be a non-firing cylinder due to lack of spark , not a plugged injector. That is the only way that "fuel wash" in cylinder happens, and it is a bad thing w/ straight gasoline, that's for sure.

SOOOOO........, if you have a normally good running engine /w good compression sealing, just throw a bottle of techron in when you feel like it and change your oil at normal intervals, IMO. Also, just using Chevron gas regularly will probably keep things pretty clean. :cool:

I think you are smelling your own breath!

Techron is a petroleum distillate that does not combust. Based on the dilution of oil (it weeps down thru the rings and cleans the cylinder walls on the way to the oil pan) the oil must be changed within 500 miles of treatment. Porsche had a bulletin on Techron several years ago and providied the warning about the oil changes.

I have always heard and live by the best application a few times a year. Add 10-20 ounces to 1/4 tank gas, run and repeat.

I use Chevron gas exclusively and do not add Techron. but I do know that Techron is good stuff, and that it is a nasty solvent that does not combust. Oil should be changed after use. If your injectors are clogged, put a whole bottle in when your tank is 1/4 or even lower. Drive a couple dozen miles and fill up, using another bottle of techron. Drive until the tank is about empty and then change oil. This clears most clogged injectors. B-12 Chemtool is good, too.

I burn nothing but Chevron Premium in my 83 too. But I do use a bottle of Techron just before oil changes just to keep it clean. I add it at 1/4 tank and fill it up. Drive that tank out and change the oil. CIS likes it clean.

My '88 gets Chevron 93 all of the time, and from time to time I put some Techron in. Get the big bottle, I drink about 6 oz myself to keep things running tip top!

well, I didn't say I put the Techron in the tank...just that I do one bottle then fill the gas tank.

I've been thinking of adding Techron but haven't yet, but I do burn Chevron 90% of the time.
By the sounds of this thread it wouldn't hurt to add some before my next oil change?? I did have new injectors put in recently and noticed a big difference in power and just smoother running. want to take good care of my little squirters. I did see it at Costco.

Didn't make the SB run...a little too nuts around our house these days. The wife is working 70 hour weeks and my son would have gotten carded at the winery :)
