Ssi heat exchangers question

Hi,
The more I learn about the ssi heat exchangers the more questions I have.
My car is 1976 2.7l two heat exchangers into one out to the muffler.

My questions are:
Is there ssi heat exchangers two in one ?
Are the original oem setup two in one still sold by anyone?
If not then I need new muffler , true?
What other hardware do I need if I go with ssi and new muffler? Oil lines?
I have recently learned about bisimoto pulse chamber which from what I can see is only meant for the two in one setup.
Thank you

SSIs

Hello! The SSIs need a “2 in” muffler. There are many flavors of mufflers and you can drown (immerse?J yourself in reading about them. But there is no cross over exhaust pipe with the SSI so you need a two inlet muffler. Also you need to change the oil line.
I can’t remember but I think two of them. One line goes where the previous cross over pipe lived.

Also there are two flavors of ssi. Thick flange and thin flange. I think you need thin but you better double check !

Hope this helps..

BTW I put SSI on my SC with a M&K 2 in 1 out and love it!

That setup is beautiful.
At the moment I want to fix the oil leaks and get away with what I have until I really know what I want.
Factory he will do fine for now. I need to find a set.

I sense some confusion here

First SSI is a trade name for heat exchangers that replicate the header design used on most 911s thru '1974. This design uses a muffler w/ twin inlets.

stainless steel(ss) is a material that is used to construct better exhaust systems. SSI uses ss in it's construction but so does the newer versions of factory heat exchangers.

By around '76 factory heat exchangers & mufflers were made of ss. The ones you pictured appear to be ss.

ss can corrode w/ time. If you need new, then the factory versions are available from Porsche or you can update to the more efficient older design w/ twin pipes going to the twin in muffler made of ss by SSI

Good explanation, that picture above is not from my setup. Here are mine. The heating hoses were removed and I can see he heater flapper boxes are completely gone.
Come to think of it, how would one know that the heat exchangers are gone?
I only know what the original owner told me.

Look for holes on the metal, Porsche designs these parts in a clever way. The outer(visible) metal is designed to corrode faster than the inner(critical) metal. Holes will appear in the shell long before the inner is perforated. Perforation of the inner is the critical part because that's what allows CO to enter the cabin.

From the last pic the heat exchangers appear nominal, Your heat issue is likely to be w/ the chassis valves which are a definite issue and lack of hoses.

I agree with you.
I do plan to take them out this winter to fix the return tube and oil cooler leaks so I will inspect them properly for any holes.
I also plan to get he heater flapper boxes first and I do have the heating hoses.

Thank you.

Kava..., I guess you don't have to worry about smog tests for your car, as you don't mention your location. "SSI"s are the way to go, if you don't have to worry about originality for emissions.

I swap my SSIs every 2 years, keeps the nuts and studs free and I get the added benefit of under car inspection in detail. Worth every second for the SSI music that comes out of the M&K!

here is pretty well everything you need.

Plus 6 new head to ssi gaskets and two for the muffler.

Then you need to bend a couple of wrenches but I have not done that yet.

also make sure you get the correct SSIs as there are thick and thin flange. Same if you just replace your current exchangers. Make sure you get the right ones. I believe yours are thin flange.

I love the way my SSI and Dansk Sport 2 in 1 out sounds. Not to loud. It is definitely louder then my stock muffler.

Are there louder options for 2 in 1 mufflers that look stock from the outside?

If you want the look of a stock muffler either Dansk Sport or cut open your stock muffler and modify. MK muffler 2 in 1 out is louder, but doesn't look like the stock muffler.

not sure what you really hope for, but I must say I didn't want my Dansk 952 mussfler 2:1 to be any louder. Would it be louder it might be fun for 10 minutes, but on a road trip or so, you'll hate yourself.

If I recall correctly, there are no Dansk Sport mufflers in 2-in-1 configuration. Buying a normal one and cutting it open is definitely an option but will require some trial and error that I would prefer to avoid.

I like mine - great quality, and frees up a few hp over the dansk 2-1 it replaced

Note, you can buy a dansk sport 2-1, even an SSI badged item
