question about rolling car w/o trans
I'm without an engine and trans at the moment.
Figured this would be a good time to get some rust repaired on the car. I need to tow my car to a body shop to get some rust repaired.. What's the best/safest way to roll the car without a trans?

Pull the CV shafts, secure the heater hoses and clutch cable, seal off the oil system and take it wherever you want.

flatbed it. tie the axels up so they can spin freely, or better yet remove them from the hubs and proceed.

great.... thank you.
Wasn't sure if I should pull the axles or if I could just let them hang with some wire support to allow them to spin.... Is it difficult to pull them off the wheel hubs???

Half shafts........
You can not remove the Carrera 3.2 half shafts (‘87) if you need the rear wheels installed for moving the car. Use some strong wires to hang the half shafts (axles) to allow them to rotate freely.

Didn't look it was an 87 G50 car. Yes, correct. Tie up the axles with wire. You can loop over the shock towers. They are almost directly above the axles. Get them to hang level and you will be fine.

If you pull the halfshafts be sure to leave the splined axle stub in the hub. Rolling it or stepping it down on a flatbed can cause the hub to pull away from its inner bearing half. I was skeptical about this but actually saw it happening when I had the rolling chassis I bought shipped to me. Short term solution was to use long heavy bolts through the hubs with some big washers on either side. Tightened it up and it was good to roll.

Put a nut & bolt through the inner CV joint pieces to hold them together.
Bag the CV joints. Suspend the half shafts with motorcycle tie down straps horizontally. Use the winch you bought at Harbor Freight ![]()

Keep speed down!!
Keep the speed down to a crawl, or it is possible that the axles will whip around like a mad thing, ripping out the wiring harness, clutch cable or anything else it can get a hold of.
Bagging the inner cvs will keep everything from sharing the grease and conversely, it will keep trash/dirt out of the cv grease. Chris |
