Post tranny updates on early G50

I seem to recall people talking about doing "tranny updates" when replacing the clutch in a pcar with an early G50 ('87). Anyone know what these updates entail?

Also, I'm assuming that at 80K miles, the original alternator would be on the list of things likely to need replacing soon?

The clutch update includes a new release shaft, solid bearings (replacing weak needle bearings), and possibly a new (late style) clutch fork. Oh, and I too just replaced my alternator on my `88 with 100K+ miles.

When my was done I think they also used a spring centered clutch rather than a rubber centered one. Someone correct me if this is not a typical "upgrade". You definitely want the upgraded clutch release mechanism.

Question

Just curious, but weren't you looking for a 993 after selling the '87? What's up?

Can't a whupped boy change his mind? Isn't that the shemale perogative?

In searching for 993's, I'm running into the reality that to get a nice one, I'll have to spend more than I want. And they will cost more to maintain than a clean 3.2. On further review, I should have kept my '87, but live and learn. So in order to stay under budget, and also go with what *I* really want (as opposed to pleasing all parties), I'm on the lookout for a clean '87-'89 coupe under 100K miles. Still thinking about a used M Coupe, but my heart lies with the 911.....

And yes, the wife is onboard. Of course the betting window will be open once the purchase is complete.

Try these:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/012399.html

I updated the shaft, bearings, release fork, guide tube, release bearing, slave cylinder and clutch disc (76-77 930 spring disc). Had the Porsche dealer cut the trans. housing, but did the rest of the work at home.

If you go with the non OEM stuff you have to make sure to replace the shaft AND the fork. They must be done together as the old fork has different bearings in it that wont work with the new shaft.

Hope that helps.

To my knowledge, no "force" was involved with people reading my posts. You are free to ignore at will.

As for jimbo, I'll ignore the flame bait. You have a super day!

Hey, Nostatic, I gave you a lot of grief (like the others) during your trials & tribulations. Really sorry that you gave up that 87, but I'm sure you'll find another one. Just want you to know that your candor on this board, and your willingness to openly share your human flaws, demonstrates a character of strength. You're obviously secure enough about who you are, and you're accepting of your human flaws. I can think of a dozen times when I went back and forth on some purchase situation. Done that with cameras, cars, motorcycles, & even a house.
Keep the faith, and let us know when you get that dream car. (as long as its a 911, Don't settle for the M. Trust me

Jeezus - hey nostatic, ask your wife to get your bunny slippers and pink bathrobe (the one with the frills - your favorite) so you can feel comfortable discussing porschies with your coffee clatch.
