I sanded mine and hit it with rattle can black. Looks great. Made my own walnut shift knob.

Satin black from a rattle can is fine. If you want to do it right, treat it like a body panel; start with bare metal, primer, sand, then color coat or two.
Allow to dry thoroughly before handling. With the exception of the pinkie ring wear, this is unlike a door handle that is man-handled frequently. Powder coating is nice, but overkill unless you have a DIY setup. For regular folks, doing it professionally means throwing in other pieces to justify the minimum charge. Sherwood |
Thanks everyone for the input! I think I'm going to go with the Rustoleum option - I'll try to remember to come back and post results when I'm done in a few weeks.

Toddetch,
You might want to “Blueprint” the shifter while you have it apart. Here are the instructions : Seine Systems > Blue Printing the 915 Shift Housing I did it, makes a bit of a difference. Good luck. -Steve |
Thanks merlinfe - I'm looking into it now. Great tip!

paint
you need a hard coat paint on it, i used regular spray can paint on some black parts and they chipped and scratched and frankly it was a waste of time and money.
the paint guys on the paint thread here, suggest that you mix your own paint and use preval sprayers for small jobs. i used the prevals on some parts and they turned out nice ' get 2 preval spray kits (home depot) get good respirators get good nitril gloves. go to an automotive paint supplier get some epoxy primer and reducer for it get some black paint ppg works get some hardener for the paint get the reducers. mix epoxy primer as required has to sit a bit mix your black paint with hardener. has to sit a bit. spray the epoxy, should dry quickly spray black coat wait a bit spray another coat. probably cost about 75 bucks but you will have paint and epoxy for other little parts that may need spruced up with black. |
