Has anyone refinished their shift stick?
 

Next month I'm taking out my seats for refurbishing and while they're out I'm going to do some work including installing a new shift coupler and a Seine gate. My shift stick has is scratched up (see pic below), I'm guessing from PO's ring or something over time. Any suggestions on the proper way to prepare and paint the stick while I have it out?

if you do the Seine kit right you will be doing some welding lower down on the shaft so id wait it out until that's done. question is how far do you want to go? you could sand and paint it, or take a grinder wire cup wheel to it and strip it completely. really, unless you powder coat it any painting effort might wear off again if you shift off knob at all. the factory coating is hard to replicate wear wise with paint.

remove it after the welding and have the entire thing powder coated. maybe $50?

that is a strange wear location to be sure.

Cool cup holder. My shifter has almost identical wear, interesting.

When I did my seine install I sanded down the old paint with 400 then 500 then 1000 grit and shot it with new coat of black satin. Turned out very nice. I ended up adding a wood 917 balsa knob because it gets balls hot here in the summer and burning your hand while driving is no beuno.

+1 on the powder coat, buy an extra shaft (they're common in poor shape, i'll offer one at $35 mailed) and have it redone. no down time and they can do a satin if you like that. cheers, geoff

Yeah, it's probably from a ring. A lot of people shift with their hand on the lever below the knob for the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts. It must be cooler to do it that way I guess...

@c2kid: I may take you up on that just to have a backup and in case I screw one of them up (and I guess that way I could keep the original with the patina).

@Drymartiniwi: In this case, I'm just not fond of the patina.

Oh, and @Mad Hunt, it was very easy to install right on the seat rail and holds something like a Yeti tumbler very well. It has a fairly large hole so if something was pretty small it might jostle around a bit. I could measure the opening tomorrow if you would like.

I changed my mind after considering it might look like an S&M dungeon after that...

Drive it more and wear off the rust! I remember a number of VW's with similar patina that my parents and grandparents had over they years.... except they were shiny steel from use...

Rustoleum 7777 Satin Black aerosol. Looks factory, wears way better than factory, widely available.

As a few others mention, I like or maybe just don't mind the "patina" look on that particular part. I've thought about a simple spray paint update but not applied any effort.
My car gets a lot of miles applied normally so stuff is gonna get worn.

Sand it and use some POR-15, done. Don't have to remove it and will be far more durable than factory.

That's if you don't think the Rustoleum solution is adequate?

Electrical wire shrink tubing. You'll be sorted in <5 minutes.
