3.2 Carrera Audio Upgrade Help
Hello All,
I just got my first Porsche, an 88 Targa. I'm looking to upgrade the sound system in the car as it has the original stereo. I want to do something reversible and simple to replace the head unit speakers and possibly the amp. My car has the options M-158, Blaupunkt Monterey Cassette radio, M-490 Hi-Fi Sound system, M-494 Rear deck speakers with amplifier. I have seen various posts on this subject but they have left me confused as to what parts I need for a simple install. I'm not too concerned with what the new head unit or speakers look like as long as everything is reversible. Any ideas? Thanks |

Hello and welcome to the forum! I would suggest checking out the Crutchfield site - they have a very convenient configurator in place where you plug in your make/model/year and the populated results are only ones that will work with your specific model; you shouldn't have any issues putting it back to stock if needed. Lastly, I'm attaching a link to our site's DIY tech articles for your reference in case you're going to be doing the maintenance/repairs yourself down the line. Please let us know if you have any questions!

I just replaced the head unit in my 85 Targa. I went with a Pioneer DEH-X6900BT mainly because of the clean look of the faceplate. I also liked the fact that this unit did not have funky light shows going on with its illumination, and you can set the color of the display using RGB codes. I set mine to match the color of the incandescent bulbs of the dash. Blends nicely, and now I have bluetooth connectivity.

Look at Alpine head units and amps.
Consider a low profile bass with built in amp under passg seat, say something like This just as an example. A new amp takes up room, many toss them in the front trunk; think about where before you do and how you can make it easy to move when you got to get into certain areas.
