Will Porsche stop making classic 911 parts?
There are certain parts that I would want to buy as original Porsche parts.
I notice that on this site (and Porsche's classic site) that there are some original Porsche parts available, but other parts are not available. What is Porsche's policy on providing OEM parts? Do they make a limited run on something? Reason I'm asking is that in the future I will need to purchase some parts, but I currently am not ready to buy them yet. But I don't want to miss my opportunity, should these parts become 'No Longer Available'. Thanks |

I recently went to a drive day at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta. During a tour of the Classic Workshop they gave us the latest classic catalog. It's expanding all the time as more and more models become 10 years old. They also encouraged us to contact Porsche North America and petition for certain parts that are needed but can't be found in their catalog. My impression was that it's definitely an expanding business for them. I don't expect it will go away. They claim that 70% of the produced fleet is still on the road and they intend to keep it that way.

Some NLA parts are resurrected in the Classic program while others are not. No one really knows how long the classic parts will be available before they go NLA (again). Personally, I would buy what you need if it's available.

Does Pelican have some kind of service that notifies me know when an original Porsche or OEM part is available? There are some parts that I don't necessarily 'need', but if an original replacement was available, I would buy it.

There are a lot of us in the same boat. There are a lot of us that frequent the 911 Used Parts Classifieds.
Now may be the time to start collecting parts you desire.

In retro'ing popout rear quarter windows into my '80 SC - I looked high and low for used parts only to find new parts CHEAPER than those selling used. Using Pelican with PET part numbers. Worked perfect and everything was new.

I think the future is good for the necessary mechanical parts. I think the aftermarket will step in as it has for the old Beetles.
Amazingly I found O'riley has many old VW parts. I had to do a major brake job on my '67 VW and they had everything. Ordered it on line and it came to my door. Great! Funny that Pelican laughed at me when I searched for Beetle stuff here. It will continue to be hit and miss for the aircooled Porsches. For example a few years ago I ordered some shims and other parts for my 915. Suddenly they were NLA. Now you can get them aftermarket, I think. As far as trim and special interior stuff goes, that remains to be seen. 356 stuff still shows up from time to time. So we should be good for a long time.

After seven years of a car going out of production manufacturers are no longer required to provide replacement parts for those cars. What's remaining in stock on shelves is what you get.
Porsche has actually done a fantastic job supplying a huge inventory of parts for cars that have been out of production in some cases for over 50 years. It would be extremely costly to keep every part in stock. If you're looking for a new item and find it available you might want to purchase it before it goes NLA. Sometimes, as Luccia mentioned, parts go back into production but perhaps only for a limited run. I'm happy Porsche provides the parts they do but wish some of the items weren't so expensive.

There is now available a Special Procurement form that can be used to request NLA parts at Porsche Classic dealers. Only available through Porsche Classic Partner dealers.

Porsche actually does a fantastic job of supporting older models. At a huge markup I'm sure, but still..... I find more NLA parts on my 1993 Mazda RX7 than my 1982 911, and it's not even close.

If you are only looking at Pelican or Porsche Classic for such parts, you are doing it wrong.

I am amazed as to how many parts for the classic 911 are still available. I restored a 15 year old GM car at the time and had difficulty finding many simple parts.

Basically Porsche will have a two tiered parts system where high level restorations will be able to get parts that have been long discontinued looking period exact in every way. So like H4 lenses that say Bosch not American Lighting etc.
