915 Transmission will it fit in the trunk!
Dear all,
I am currently in the market for a mid year 912e. Found a good solid car, with quite a few miles on the old tranny. 230k miles to be precise, with no history of ever being rebuilt ![]() As I am located in Europe and 923/915s are a scare resource here, I am considering buying a spare transmission to ship with the car, preferably in the trunk! My question is then: Will a 915/923 transmission fit it in the trunk? Hopefully another member has gone down this slippery road before ![]() I am aware of the solution of shipping the transmission in a crate. Thanks! Michael |

I suspect it will not fit in the trunk of a 911 or 912. I bet it is too tall. Maybe if you take the spare tire out, it might fit. You can get a ice chest to put the transmission in. It might well fit on the rear parcel shelf if you can get the front seat pushed all the way forward to give you some room to get the ice chest back there.
Maybe some other members will chime in with more information. I certainly have never tried it.

Just pull the passenger seat, put the trans on the floor with supports/tie-downs and lay the seat on the shelf. Like you, Glen, I have not tried this.

It won't fit in the trunk, but it will fit on the passenger floor. Years ago I shipped a 65 912 to Europe with not just a gearbox, but an engine in pieces and 5 5.5x14 Fuchs INSIDE the car. No seat though.
You don't need a spare gearbox. Only thing special about it is the mainshaft. There's a guy on RL who recently bought the last NOS one out of Germany and refused to install it because the gear numbers didn't match. Totally silly, imo. Really the only other unique part is the release fork he needs. He has offered to sell the mainshaft for 1/2 price. You should hit him up. Everything else about that gearbox is 915. https://rennlist.com/forums/911-forum/1040572-clutch-release-fork.html
