Certificate of Authenticity question

Hello - I recently received my PCoA for my '84 Carrera. It stated that the car came without a Vehicle Identification Plate, but one exists by the windshield on the left side of the car. I called Porsche for clarification, they stood behind their certificate and mentioned that this was an option for that model year.

I've heard that this was indeed an option, is it basically an error on the PCoA?

That is not the identification plate referred to on the COA. The VIN tag that you see is a federally mandated tag that is not optional. The optional Vehicle Identification Plate would likely be the Carrera tag on the engine lid; this is a delete option, that is it is normally there unless you request it to be removed. This is a somewhat rare option. It would be an interesting COA to see.

Thanks for the response. Here is the copy of the COA, coincidentally, it also states that it came without tire and compressor. Are they referring to the spare tire?

Appreciate the help.

I believe the COA states the car came "Without Compressor and Tire Pressure Gauge". Meaning, the line under the "Without Compressor..." is part of that same line. It's similar to the line in the first column that states, "Speedometer w/2 Scales" and the line under that states, "KPH/MPH." It makes sense to me because the compressors came with a tire pressure gauge as part of the device.

Do you have an inflatable spare?

Thanks for the clarification, now that you point it out, it's quite obvious! Yes, the car does have an inflatable spare.

Any thoughts on the Vehicle Identification plate?

Does your deck lid have “Carrera” on it?

I agree with djpateman that the plate is not the VIN plate but rather the tag on the engine lid.

Yes, deck lid does have Carrera on it. I guess it was installed at a later time.

Three possible explanations, IMO. First, there may be another "plate" that was available that was placed on the glove box or elsewhere in the interior--just a guess on that. Second, as you speculate, the tag was placed later, or the engine lid may have been replaced at some time. Third, the COA is in error--not the first time that mistakes have been discovered. Regardless, if your car matches everything else on the COA, this discrepancy is minor.

Thanks, those delete options are quite rare; more so that there are 3. This was custom ordered.

Wow, didn’t realize the rarity of the option. I believe here was an ‘84 on Bat about 2 months ago that had the same option as well.
