James Garner starred in Grand Prix, and drove the pace cars in a bunch of NASCAR and USAC events. I think he even tried racing wheel-to-wheel while Paul Newman was doing it. Bill K

Damn, that link is awesome. It's got a Shelby vibe to it. Only in California and only in those times.

I remember watching that show, my mum was a fan, and my dad actually had a firebird in the same colour (I think that was a coincidence as he wasn't really a car guy). I remember the episode that picture is from he was trying to get some info and made a comment about his Carrera being in the shop, it was the first time I had ever heard that word...

I watched Kojak, Six Million Dollar Man, Starsky & Hutch, Cannon, et al when I was a kid in England...prepared me for life in America! But my two favorites were Barney Miller and Rockford, both lighthearted but about mensch-like guys, flawed as we all are, but without machismo-ego, and empathetic. I happily watch re-runs now on COZI TV, and whereas B Miller was filmed in a studio, Rockford had all these great exterior shots; the cars we get see from Los Angeles back in the day are just mind-blowing now. Columbo is excellent too for all the same reasons. My Mum always thought James Garner was a hunk. Thanks so much for posting this. John in CT.

When my family first moved to So. Call in the summer of '74 I happened across his trailer in the beach parking lot at Paradise Cove just north of Malibu. The show was riding high and it was my first exposure to filming in Los Angeles. Starstruck to say the least. You might enjoy this link to Rockford Files filming locations if you're a man of a certain age, lol. Scott Rockford Files Filming Locations: THE ROCKFORD FILES - EPISODE: Profit & Loss Part II (1974) Car chase ends at 2313 4th Ave Los Angeles, CA (Cul-de-sac)

They filmed quite a few Rockford episodes down in the LA Harbor area. I worked in a warehouse on the docks in the 70s and one episode was partially filmed in my warehouse. We would have to stop working while they shot the scene (too bad) and then go back to work when the yelled cut.

I got to talk to James several times between scenes, mostly about filming Grand Prix. Truly a super nice guy and didn't pretend to be a big celebrity in any way. When I talked to a couple of the crew they said he was the best to work with.

I moved to SoCal as a kid from the UK in 1981 and thought anyone could have a trailer at Malibu....like it was commonplace! I suppose we all have rose-colored glasses but I miss those years, although I know they were fraught with their own issues, especially for certain less privileged groups. My nostalgia is what's driving the marketers of cathetas and Depends on COZI!

...there was an episode this past week where the bad guy drove an Irish Green 912 or 911, ending in a nice e-brake skid.

Rockford was certainly flawed but I don't remember him killing anybody in an episode. His counterpart, Magnum PI, did kill someone in one of the earlier episodes.

YellowCab - agreed, different values, less flippant than now about violence, more grey area (sympathetic bad guy characters, too). Jim and his flunky Angel had both served time themselves. Why I also like Barney Miller so much...I've read that real cops say that is the most accurate portrayal of police officers...regular guys, flawed, trying to find the humor in an otherwise dark profession.
