tragic end
was provided these shots from a colleague of mine at the public agency I work for. the slides were found in an old photo album at a well/tank site of the city's and they alerted me to it to see if I could get them converted to digital format. cars involved in major crimes or vehicular fatalities get parked at the city corp yard during the investigation process and this is the case here. we do not know if these were investigative photos or taken by corp yard staffers due to the sheer magnitude of the destruction. we anticipate they may be police photos due to some being shot from a bucket truck. god speed this longhood & it's pilot.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() by the looks of some of the cars in the back ground I anticipate these are from the early 80. the ford van would seem to indicate such.

Reversed or not, it looks like it was the passenger side that took the worst of the hit. Which at least gave the driver the opportunity to not die. But if these slides came from a collection of crimes and/or fatalities, then the worst probably did happen.

that was pointed out to me, but I was not going to get critical with the lady in my office that got the slides turned to digital format.

When did this happen? A long time ago, I presume. It's not clear what the purpose was to post this, but it might be instructive to learn the nature of the accident; t-bone? what other vehicle or object caused this?

Looks like impact with a pole or tree, at a pretty high rate of speed...

Looks like a large pole or tree caused this car to stop. Drivers head probably impacted something in the passenger side with great force, sad end to car and river.

***** happens. That said anyone who drives one of these aircooled cars, or any vintage performance car, needs to be vigilant on the road. Modern cars have a lot more safety built into them.
Anyone who owns one of these cars should take a performance driving class where they can learn the limits of what the car is capable of and how to control the car at or beyond it's limits. Attending a track event or an auto cross is a very good and safer way to have fun driving fast.

Looks like it happened a long time ago because look at the other cars in the background? Plus these were slides. When was the last time slides were even made?
I'll say the same thing I said on FB. First guy who says "don't lift" gets thunderpunched in the neck......... ![]()

there is additional text under the last photo where I estimate early 80's. the 3rd shot down has the white Nissan truck with the city logo and that's an early 80s model, maybe even still datsuns at that point.

Ah, I thought this was the most recent offering from the Beverly Hills Car Club priced right at only $46,999 over on the Market Place forum.

no knowledge of what happened in regards to the accident. the instructive purpose was to imbed these images in mind so when you are on a public road and feeling a little "outlaw-ish" to consider the consequences.... I've filed them.

Sorry to speculate, but seat belts weren't commonly used in those days.

When I saw this my mind immediately said:
"This is what his car would have looked like if James Dean was driving a 911." Thanks for sharing this. You realize as other people have stated, modern cars have it all over vintage iron when it comes to safety. You also realize there is very little other than pressed steel that makes up a 911. |
