Rocker arm shaft torque.

I've been reading in here that the shafts "walk" at the factory torque specs but haven't seen a quote on what number to shoot for. Anybody?

25 Nm is what I remember from Wayne's book. Get Wayne's engine book for reference. If you can't get a torque wrench in there, just tighten by hand as much as you can with a short allen head wrench. You will be in the same range.

Has anyone thought of possibly inserting some sort of "stop" between the rocker arm shafts to keep them from walking out of the bore? I'm thinking some sort of threaded nut with short section of threaded rod to expand and limit the movement? i just found #4 had moved a fair amount and I'd made sure they were tight when i did the rebuild several years ago. Got it tight again but now am worried about it walking out over time.

Buck,

Turbokraft makes a nice rocker shaft lock system. A bit expensive but a nice solution if you have shafts that just refuse to stay put

11 foot pounds for new ones, 18-19 foot pounds for used ones. Never had a problem. Was told this by Walt Watson, competition engineering.

Kevin, thanks that's a pretty good idea. I guess the flanges keep it from walking either direction? Pricey but may be worth the reduced stress worrying about them moving.

We torque re used ones to 19 lb/ft. Never had a problem. We have seen some that have walked on engines built by others that used new OE specs.

Cheers

Hi Boys..there is one thing nobody has mentioned..If you work on the rocker shafts make sure that you recheck them in 1000 miles. That is the most common mistake with loose shafts...

This.

Walt told me 21'lbs but I'm sure 19 is good enough.

I am now planning to remove all valve covers to check, the lower driver side shows no movement in any of the rocker arms so plan to leave those alone. Will be tackling the upper/intake next. I'm still working on some sort of method to limit the movement, unless I decide to spring for the previously mentioned solution.
