67 SWB to LWB ST style, R inspired, Hotrod
My client purchased this car last March in hopes of building an R inspired hotrod. He really loves the 1967 R, so this car being a 67 was a natural fit for his dream. We were busy with the Riviera Blue hotrod and would not be able to start his car until we returned from Monterey in August.
A little about the car, it started life as a 1967 912, of course it was a SWB car and it was a non sunroof model, which saved us some time not having to fill that hole. The previous owner had already transplanted a 3.0 and 915 into the car along with SC brakes and suspension converting it to a LWB. He had welded on the flares and gave the interior a minimalist R inspired treatment. The car had some issues that we could see but unfortunately there was alot more that we could not see. Some of the things we knew that we would be addressing was the wiring, front suspension pan, scratches in most of the glass, substandard body work, prep and paint. All the trim had been powder coated gray. Change out of wheel and tire package and redo the interior to a higher standard. One of the better points was that the car had been stripped by the prior owner and he did epoxy prime the whole tub. One of the first things that was a surprise was the motor, it had supposedly been rebuilt within the last 20K miles. But no that was not the case, it actually had never been rebuilt, ever. That actually turned out to be a good thing (well as good a thing as rebuilding an engine can be) as no one had monkeyed with it. It turned out to be pretty good inside other than the cylinders were worn out, necessitating new cylinders. Mark Kinninger at Black Forest in San Diego did the rebuild on the engine which included a set of good used cylinders, higher compression JE pistons and bigger Webcam cams. Anyway I will start posting pictures below, we just finished painting the shell and we will be bringing the car to Tony at Autobahn next week for a custom carpet install and then start assembling. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg Gaps were not very good to say the least http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg New suspension pan for the front http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg The wiring was a mess http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg The "rebuilt motor" with 20K miles http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518158427.jpg |
This is what both front fenders looked like on the backside
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518159166.jpg The left rear fender was rubbing, the whole rear of the car was out of whack, we had to split the flare and redo the rear quarter http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518159166.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518159166.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518159166.jpg The headlight bucket was literally falling out of the car, we ended up replacing the whole bucket and making a piece for the fender/bucket area http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518159584.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518159584.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518160193.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518160193.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518160193.jpg |

Just got the car back from Tony and the crew at Autobahn Interiors. Beautiful perlon carpet kit installed, did a nice leather wrap with orange stitching on the e-brake handle to match the dash, and put an insert on the inside of the glovebox door that matches the seat material. I think it is a really nice touch, I wish I had thought of that, but it was my clients idea! Gauges are just sitting there I had to see what they would look like !

That car is looking good, great color.
|
excellent work.
|
I really like the fabric choice on the seats. Nice to see something other than corduroy, basketweave, and houndstooth.

Thanks for the support to all the pelicans that have chimed in it means a lot.
Cory here are a couple more shots of the harness, Dennis really does a nice job and it is custom to the car so there are no extra wires. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1519772978.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1519772978.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1519772978.jpg |
