**** You Porsche, **** You in the Ear!
Metal trim around the rubber seal keeps popping out when I try to place the window in the car. The seal itself doesn't want to fit around into the frame. Yuge gaps everywhere. I'm so pissed off with this Porsche project. Local professionals are useless (they refuse to work on old Porsches for this very reason). Yes I"m using Porsche seals and Porsche trim. Local owners club has not responded to my request for help. Is there another solution? Way to modernize window installation that does not involve useless trim and crap seals? I will put a V8 in this Porsche if I don't get help soon!!!

I feel your pain...I just struggled with targa bar seals and was yelling for Elon Musk to launch this car. People here will chime in, I hope, and give you some clues to success. Unfortunately, I can only provide encouragement. Don't give up.

Are you getting help? You really need to have someone pressing firmly and applying force uniformly as you pull the string out from the inside of the seal while in the car. If the metal is even slightly tweaked, it'll pop right out. Before install: Make sure you put the glass on a couple sawhorses, put the seal on, metal strips in and check to make sure it's nice and tight up against the seal. If it's pulling up anywhere, give it 3 or 4 very light taps with a hard plastic hammer starting from where it's flat and moving toward where it's popped out.

Banned but not out, yet..

Bought a new OEM Porsche rear window seal for my coupe 2 months ago and unsuccessfully 6 times to get everything to seat correctly. My friend had a 5 year old seal which had never been installed. We compared them and the new one had subtle differences in the corners. We installed the new 5 year old one on the first try with zero drama. Evidently the new seals sold by Porsche are not exact copies and have issues. I would suggest trying some other sources rather than banging your head.

Has anyone recently installed non Porsche front or rear seals? I’m about to buy both and I’m having second thoughts on the fit of Porsche seals now. Porsche cost so much more.

Two choices.. Leave it out, or get a seal from an '89 model. It doesn't use that strip and has a flattened piece made onto the seal that looks similar.

Doesn’t the metal trim go in AFTER the window and seal is installed ??

Find a good used seal. The 964 set up is also an option. |

No the bezel goes in first. But it has to be perfect or near to. What I have done previously with a used one is lay it out on the glass - see how it does not sit perfect and adjust accordingly. Be prepared to spend some time doing this in small increments. The joiner strips go in later.
There are lots of threads about how to tricks to make the job work. But these are not the simplest bits of glass to fit - although I have managed several times. I once had an insurance fit and the screen popped out partially after about 30 miles into a long trip. Took it to another installer who ordered proper new bezel - the previous installer tried using a generic one. Alan

If I am correct the 1989 911s (NOT 964) that used the 964 style seal also had the 964 rear glass, that is about 3-5 mm larger than the 911 glass. So one might end up with a glass floating in the seal. |

following this as I too had issues with getting a good install of the front windscreen. Very interested in which glass/seal combinations that will work on the SC....

it's not clear to me how fitting a V8 will fix it. I haven't seen any tips of how-to referring to that solution.
But it does help to have someone following the cord pushing down from the outside to help seat it. But I have generally done mine solo. Not always sucessful first time. Alan
