Does it really matter if I just use the spacer on the idler?

I am sure this has been talked about but I could not find it.

Does it matter if I just use the $4 spacer for the idler when installing Carrera tensioners instead of upgrading to the new idler arms? The new arms are now close to $700 - when Wayne's old book says they used to be $130 or so. No way I'm going the $700 route (I'd find used ones). What do you guys think of that 930 spacer used on them?

You really should upgrade your idlers as well. Take a close look at your idler shafts. You will most likely see galling.

Someone on this board does upgrades with brass bushings for around $400 IIRC. Hopefully they will chime in as I can't recall their name....

Good used parts have made our 911s live long past the typical life of cars that go through major model changes from year to year. Cars for the masses have to do that to continue mass sales.

I agree with Gordon that it's smart to ensure the idlers are bushed and well supported. Have your old idler arms rebushed with a spacer built into the bushing. Henry Schmidt at Supertec can update them

I found bad idlers in my supposedly updated and well-built race car engine. Someone ignored or overlooked the old style, unbushed idler arms but thought they were being smart by using the Carrera tensioner update. Carrera tensioners of course did nothing to prevent the arm from seizing on the pivot post.

Idler gears with wider bushings........

I had mine done by Craig Garrette at a very reasonable price and will have another done this spring. He actually shipped them back to me before I made any payment (?).
