Value of a '75 911S (2.7L) engine?
Hi guys,
I have a 2.7 engine that I want to unload throught the classifieds, but am running into the chicken-and-egg problem - I don't know what to ask for it, and buyers don't want to offer a price first. Can anyone ballpark this engine for me? 180,XXX Currently in the car and running. I've also done a compression test on videotape: Compression 151-130-147-160-160-155 No exhaust system (I'm keeping the SSIs and sport muffler) Carrera Tensioners 11 blade fan Pop-off valve installed K&N filter 6 New Injectors, new injector o-rings Idle and mixture set two months ago Exhaust guides replaced May 99 WUR has the mod to make it adjustable New alternator Leaks about two drops of oil per day. I have not tracked down the source of this leak I don't have any information about head studs, so assume they're Dilivar. I'm going to check for broken ones but don't know about them yet. I have no idea what the value of this thing is. Anyone want to throw out some numbers? Thanks!

180,000 miles, more than a 10% difference between compression on one cylinder, another cylinder looks low, I'd say someone would be looking at a rebuild on this engine. Personally I doubt that I would pay $1,500 for this engine. Course that is just my opinion.

I just sold a 2.7 with compression between 155-164 on all cylinders, 65k miles, headers, blah, blah, blah that runs great (albeit with a stupid oil pressure problem that will probably result in a tear down - but the buyer knows that), for $1500. And I threw in a lot of extra parts.
Unfortunately, 2.7s are just not very easy to sell. Even though most of them are now good engines (having been rebuilt most likely by now), there is such a stigma associated with them that they don't fetch much money. I would consider yourself lucky to get $1500. Good, running 2.7s with no problems (like your suspect compression numbers) can be had all day long for not much more.... Good luck, Mike

Numerous negotiating experiments have shown that the agreed upon price is generally half-way between the two negotiators starting positions. So in many respects the first person to venture a proposed price will limit their side of the negotiation. So there is definitely a benefit to not be the first person to propose a price. For example: A) You're thinking $1500 while the buyer is figuring that it will take $1700 to buy the engine. You say $1500 and the buyer thinks to themselves: "What steal!" and responds "No - $1000". The final price: $1250. B) Your thinking $1500 and the buyer is thinking $1200 tops. You say "$1500" and they buffer themselves and respond "Nah - $900". The final price: $1200. And so on... Here is what I've seen for closing prices on EBay for 2.7's: Model....When....Price....Comments 2.7 + Turbo....3/11/01....$4,500.00....No bids 2.7....4/3/01....$3,000.00....No bids, relisted at $2500 74 2.7....4/11/00....$2,500.00....No Bids 2.7 w/ 3.0 Accessories....4/23/01....$1,395.00.... 2.7....6/8/01....$2,602.00.... 79 2.7 Engine....6/24/01....$6,101.00....New? 150 HP W' K-Jetronic and 915 tranny. 2.7 from '74....6/25/01....$760.00....w/ permatune CD ignition. Thanks for the feedback. I know these engines are not desireable, and I am going to fully disclose compresion, studs, etc... I just don't want to go way too high or low. I've got a better idea of what to ask for now.
Thanks! Colin

John,
That's rather impressive 'feedback' if I do say so myself! Ryan
