Hi Pelicans - I was crawling around under the car, and I got a look at my very new (<1 year old) tie rod ends. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks, Pelicans! ![]() Last edited by garment; 03-06-2018 at 06:53 AM.. |

Hard to see the ball joints, but your tie rod ends are rusty.

Check the boot around the tie-rod and make sure that it isn't split and send grease out. Like Timmy said though, if your ball joints were what was replaced then you're prob just in need of some tie-rod ends now.

If there is no play or torn boot I wouldn't worry about it. What I would worry about is getting those off when the time comes. I'm not sure how you could get some anti-seize on there without throwing your alignment off.

you can get metal etch that you spray after diluting that will remove surface rust enough to repaint to prevent further rusting. if you really wanna get at it paint with POR15 paint.
jasco makes a etch ive used a ton over the years and it works great at rust removal. mask everything but the tierod end, including the threads and repaint. good as new.

The functional parts of the tie rod ends and ball joints are packed in grease. Exterior surface rust has no structural effect. Spray it with rustoleum to prevent further surface oxidation, maybe a nice fluorescent orange.

Shoot me a PM if you want to swing by to check them out. I'm only about 5 minutes from Mt. Vernon. It just looks like surface rust and OK. But it also looks like the nut is not down far enough.
If you need a great wrench, check out RPM in Lorton.

After I completed the suspension, but before I drove it, I had Intersport in McLean check the torque on every nut and bolt, so I’m pretty confident it’s buttoned up.
Always happy to meet a fellow Pelican tho! Let’s catch up soon. Look for a PM. Thanks! |
