Jumping in feet first... 1970 911T found in San Francisco.

About a month ago I discovered a disassembled but complete 1970 911T in San Francisco that has been in storage since 1992. I'm new here and posted about it HERE.

I had to use a forklift to get it out of the building.

I contacted Porsche North America and requested a COA. Thankfully, I've had a little back and forth with them and this is what I've found out so far. Again this is just some of the info from the COA according to Porsche North America.

1970 Porsche 911T (Karmann Coupe)
VIN: 9110121981
Engine: 6106948 (Original)
Engine Type: 911/07
Transmission: 7115686 (Non-original 1971 5-speed)
Transmission Type: 911/01
Exterior Color: 14 - Signal Orange
Interior Color: 11 - Black Leatherette w/Basketweave inlays

Option Group D16:
  • Option Code 1: US Equipment
  • Option Code 2: Blaupunkt Radio 'Frankfurt' (US Band)
  • Option Code 3: Bumper Horns - F/R
  • Option Code 4: Leather Steering Wheel
  • Option Code 5: Tinted Glass All Around
  • Option Code 6: Chrome Whole Disk Wheels 5.5J X 15

Honestly, I wasn't looking for project as I already have a couple going but this was just too good to pass up. So I bought the 911 and put it in the loft at my shop with the intention of storing it until I can complete some other projects first. Well that lasted about a month. This afternoon I pulled the 911 down from the loft and and started on it.

First, I pressure washed it and then started bagging and tagging.

I removed the front and rear seats, all the trim, steering wheel, shifter, windshield, rear side glass, rear glass, headliner, dash pad, interior panels, engine insulation, carpet and carpet padding, and sound deadening. I'm looking forward to getting the COA to see what else is on it especially because of what I found.

I found an air conditioning receiver/dryer in the right front wheel well and an evaporator unit attached to a fan assembly in the trunk. Is this factory AC? If so, everything under the dash is gone. Are the missing parts available?

Are these "S" gauges?

I found a GIANT hole on each side that was covered in cardboard and duct tape. Any idea what went there or why someone would do this???

I found some rust..

I'm still not exactly sure what I'm going to do with the car but because of the rust and the holes I found I'm going to strip the entire car down to metal (soda blasting or chemical dipping). Top to bottom, inside and out. That way I can see the real condition of the unibody structure and determine if any thing needs to be repaired.

I have taken hundreds of pictures, mostly for reference. You can see them here:

To be continued...

To answer your question--No, that is definitely NOT factory A/C. That passenger side opening under the dash is bubba engineering, as is the blower and associated plumbing in the frunk. The dryer would be located in the driver-side front fender if factory.

Good luck!!!

To clarify: The blower and ducting just under the scuttle is factory, but all that junk in the smugglers' box is home-brewed...

If you want to restore the A/C Parts Heaven in Hayward usually has all the interior bits, been there and looked at them.

So you got me pretty good on that one, having never heard the term "Bubba Engineering" I Googled it. Not lying.

So I thought the holes were for speakers as well but the holes are way too large for a 6x9 speaker. It looks a monkey cut with a torch!!! I hate people sometimes.

I'm going to have AC in the car. Is this a setup I should stick with or are there better options out there?

Looks like somebody had set that car up for AX at some point. Looks like it has some Schroth ASM belts.

Those have value CPS996.

It was nice to meet you on the phone.

Quick update 2/19/2018,

I got the original 2.2 apart. Only one head stud gave me trouble. I found 2.2S pistons and (biral) cylinders. The internals look amazing. The crosshatching is still visible in the cylinders. The bearings are dated 1985 and can go right back in. The case was put together with the wrong sealant and was leaking from several places so its headed to the washer.

Going to clean and measure everything and most likely put it back together. I'll install case savers, ARP studs, turbo valve covers, update the oil pump/case, trim the engine air baffles, install Carrera tensioners, send the fan assembly off to flyingjay, rebuilt the Webers, maybe port/polish the heads, and whatever else it recommends in Wayne's book.

Anyone have a really nice std/std 2.7 crank, turbo oil pump or any of the other stuff I'm going to need?

The 3.6 is completely stock and was in a friend's track car for a few months about 10 years ago and has been sitting since. He told me that it "smokes a little at idle" so it's also coming apart and is going 4.0L and ITBs.

Nice score on the 3.6 from your friend. I'm sure you got a good deal from him.
