P258 Tool Dimension Needed
I have a VW259 tool for the pinion depth measurement that I am converting to be a P258 tool to work with 915 transmissions. I am debating on making the adapters so that it will work for both 901 and 915 transmissions. I am aware that for a 915 trans the width of the flats is 120mm. It appears that the 901 width is much smaller.
So here is my question for those who have the real deal ... 1) What is the distance between the flats of the P258 tool? 2) What is the diameter of the P258 shafts? 3) What is are the dimensions of the P258B bearing sleeves (Dia. x lenght x flange thickness)? ![]() Thanks for any info you can provide. |

Q1= 108.25mm
Q2= 45.20mm Q3= 50mm x 38mm x 5.85mm

Hey bill,
I recall that you've seen my thread, but here is the link in case it helps anyone, on page 8 there is some info on these old VW tools, and on page 9 my modified tool for use on the 915: 915 rebuild and ITB/EFI project, here we go! Some comments: 1) you can probably machine the spigot diameter down and still have enough thickness for them to be solid, but measure and and think it through before machining them almost 5mm smaller in diameter (and therefore thinner in wall thickness.) 2) With the spigot distance machined down to 120mm, you will still need some shims to get enough bearing preload. This is OK, as you want to have wiggle room for adding the right thickness shims. I'm not sure you will be able to machine all the way down to 108.25mm but measure it up and good luck.

Thanks Evan. Ill have to see how much meat is left on the tool. I know I can do what you have done no problem ... just curious how much more would be envoled to make it a true P258 to work with all transmissions. I dont have a 901 at the moment ... I doubt Ill have one in the future. The other variable is I get a quote back from the machinist that will blow this idea out of the ballpark.

FWIW the diff in my old '71 trans was the same as what is in my '72 915. Same casting # anyway.

Here is a better shot. In fact the carrier bearings are the same from 69-73. Not sure what happened in '74. Maybe Peter will chime in.
