What air cooled?!?!?

So finally removed the cis box to get to my triangle of death and boy do I have one.
I can see the are is flooded with oil and the clean area is probably the oil coming out of the oil pressure switch.
This is to be fixed, nice cleaning and new everything.

The interesting part was the top of the oil cooler.
It was jammed packed with paper and some other material probably from chipmunks or similar creatures as the car has been sitting for 5 years.
Am I glad I got to this point as there was absolutely no air going to the oil cooler.

Few photos to admire this achievement.
I will post more after all is sorted out.

Wow! With all that you're doing on this car/engine, what's keeping you from doing an engine drop to more easily access all of these areas? You sure your clutch still has plenty of life left?

Yes
I think I will drop the engine at one point maybe next winter.
I’m trying to get one summer of driving to figure out what else is needed.
I’ve cleaned and painted the fan housing before and slowly everything would look as nice.

Can certainly relate to the nest at that location. Our '71T with the same issue. Found it when attempting to put Marvel Mystery Oil into #6 (Engine not started in 5+ yeas) and felt something soft. Boroscope shows all kinds of insulation in the way of the plug hole. Had no plans to remove engine shroud/carbs/engine fan shroud/alt....

Oil cooler removed and shipped off to Pacific Oil Cooler in Cali for ultrasonic clean/pressure test/refinish.

Don't have the really bad oil leak you do.

Good luck in getting it all cleaned up and back together.

PS: Had to deal with a squirrel nest in bonnet too. What a mess.

I really have no idea how/why anyone would attempt removing a CIS with the engine in the car.

My hands couldn't fit and back wouldn't handle it

you can. just drop it 8cm and you have clearnce.

qkavadarci: remove the shroud as well! it's nearly a must! lots of oil gets pressed to the cylinders and cloggs the fins.

and by looking at the last picture, I'd drop the engine to adress it better and the engine bay.

You should pull the alternator fan assembly and clean the top of the engine which then is easily seen. I used diesel (in a spray bottle) and a pressure washer to remove years of caked on oil and dirt. Dropped engine temps significantly. The cooling fins actually felt fresh air for the first time in years.

I agree. Remove the shroud to see what else you find in there. The mouse made its way into the top of the cooler by going thru the fan blades. I wouldn't be surprised to find a bunch of junk tucked back in the other corner at the top of cylinder #3.

I know the surprise you feel when you find stuff like this. Yes I do................

Thank you for the tips, will remove the shroud.
Removing the cis was absolutely no trouble for me, way easier than I expected.

I already cleaned under the shroud when I removed the fan but will check again. This thing could have caught fire. Crazy stuff.

I was going this route when I came to my senses and dropped the entire engine and trans. Wow, glad I did. Won't ever try to do anything CIS or otherwise without doing an engine drop. I would have lost my mind putting it back in if the engine was still in situ.
