1982 Porsche 911 SC - Targa Roof Question
I have recovered the Targa roof and replaced the window seals (sides, top, and rear) but am unable to get the windows to fully engage with the upper window seal on the Targa roof - see attached photographs. The LHS gap is worse than the RHS
Insertion of a thin rubber spacer between the upper window seal and the Targa frame was unsuccessful. Has anyone encountered the same problem and what is the solution? A somewhat frustrated Ian |

Ian, was this problem present even before you rebuilt the top? You might have to go into the doors and adjust the window there.
The vent window is held in place by a couple of bolts, and can be slid up and down. You can also adjust the window travel, but be careful. If it goes up too high, it can tear the little rubber stop on the top of the vent window. These are expensive and not easy to replace. Sorry if I can't provide more details, but it's been a while since I've done this. Here is a place to start: 1980 911 Targa windows adjusting Also, did you replace the rubber seal on the top of the windshield? The currently available Porsche part is for a 964, and does not work with the older cars. The front of the top will ride too high. I'm aware of only two solutions. One, trim the new seal (not easy, there are instructions available online), or buy the custom seal sold by Dan Pechtel of Cars, Inc. in New Jersey. Mark

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the silence but other matters interceded - my other half's requirements, and the fact that the RH door internal support for the chin strap has cracked and the Porsche is now in the panel shop. Solution is internal welds including adding in a doubler plate, and then respray. I have read all your messages and the situation and the photographs in the hyperlink by Mark Salvetti in the preceding post summarises my situation (saves trying to post the pictures as still having some issues). And yes, I have adjusted up the window as far as it can go and I did replace the rubber seal on the top of the windshield. So Mark's suggested solutions look like the way to go. It is just a matter of whether I try and trim a 964 seal or purchase the custom seal from Cars, Inc in New Jersey. Cheers, Ian |

Front corners are way too high. What seal do you have in there?
If new from Porsche it is a later model style and incorrect for your year. It needs to be trimmed or Dan Petchel of Carsinc sells the correct seal. Lots of threads around about the front Targa seal fitment.

Hi Timmy2,
Thanks for your thoughts. I did purchase the top seal as well other bits from Stoddard of Ohio (OEM) and I did specify the year of manufacture. This is the first real issue that I have had with vehicle. Thinking about the matter overnight I am leaning towards contacting Dan Petchel of Cars Inc. for the correct seal. Seems to be the most cost-effective solution and avoids mutilating a seal. Cheers, Ian |

+1 top at front is seating too high.
+1 on Dan's front seal. You may need to adjust the quarter windows and windows after his seal as PO may have compensated for the wrong seal. Try this with seal off, place the top on to see where the top will sit windows up and down. Then put Dan's seal and see how much adjustment will be needed. If you need manuals PM me.

Thanks for including Dropbox link to Targa roof and window adjustment. I don’t care what anyone says this is a black art!!! Emery cloth strips, putty etc. I love my Targa but this is crazy😳 BTW got front seal from Dan last year. I should refurbish my roof while he is still doing it!
