Tires for stock 73
Argh! I have a mostly stock 73 and need tires. I do not want to lose originality, so don't tell me to change out of my 15 x 6 Fuchs. I don't want all season brick 85000 mile non performance tires either. I am running Yokohamas 205 60 15s now. Only drive in nice weather and want performance. Don't want to hear anything ridiculous like 275 45 15. Stock! Just want decent tires. Thanks

just a thaught: I like the more bulgy look of 195/65 on the 6x15
and: what's wrong with the Yokohama you have now? Not worth a repurchase?

I drive a 1973.5T and running on Dunlop Sports. The original tire size for the 1973 is 165 80 R15. Considering the car only has a top end of 128 mph, which I rarely reach, investing in $225 Pirelli 6000's is a bit much, especially due to the fast wear of Pirelli tires. I noted a NANKANG Tire 165 80 R15 with a speed rating of "T" for $50 on Amazon. What was amazing is that the tire got 86 reviews with an average score of 4.6 out of 5! The speed rating of "T" is up to 118 mph.
You are extremely limited in the original size tire for the early 911 as the size pretty much matches the early narrower Triumph, MG, Austin, etc tire sizes cars back then. Hard choices these days, but the Dunlops are best suited for these early Porsches. Bob 73.5T |

Thanks for all the replies. Flojo, the Yokomamas fail the 5 year test. Bill you have always stepped up in the past and it is appreciated. Interestingly, tires are popping up all over my screen since I started the search. Big brother Google is "helping". The car did have CN36's when my dad owned it. I think I am also going to yank the 75 sport seats, leather with cloth inserts, and put the stock seats back in. With the proceeds, I am going to buy another house.

Scott- I'm a bit reluctant to respond a) because opinion on tires is very subjective and there are so many variables between car set up and driver preference & driving style that its tough to compare, and b) I surmise you find the price of the CN36's to be pretty costly, which they are.
Of course, the CN36's are what I just got. I replaced 10 year old all-season Michelin Exalto's in 205/60/15 with 185/70/15 CN36's. I'll report that so far I'm most impressed with the 36's. They are quiet and offer a very "light" feel to them. The car feels more lively in the front, which I like, but I haven't pushed on them enough to see how the back end feels when close to the limit of the tires. They are unquestionably smoother that the old Michelin's so the ride is very comfortable and nice while on the freeway or 5/10th cruising. I'd imagine at 8-9/10's I wouldn't have the grip of the Michelin's as I'm giving up a fair amount of tire width, but maybe not. I haven't gotten on them yet. Regardless, I'm very happy with the purchase and they do look correct on the car, which was also important to me. Nick
