Sportscar together BC road Trip!

In honour of Porsche’s 70th, my better half and I are hitting the road in the 911! We’re leaving tomorrow afternoon and planing on returning next weekend. Our itinerary will take us through Revelstoke, Kamloops, Lillooet, Whistler, Sechelt, Vancouver, Hope then up the Okanagan valley.

Another reason for the trip is that Jessica is about 7 months pregnant with our first. I just bought the car in 2016 and this may be our last hoorah before the insanity starts!

All systems are go as of tonight, I had a little worry with a wheel bearing but looks like everything checks out. The car has 90K miles, all fluids are fresh, maintenance is up to date, she’s ready to go!

I’ll try to update as best I can with a nightly recap and a few pictures. If you’re on the way, please drop me a line, it’s always good to meet fellow Pelicans!

Wish us luck,

Alex

Awesome. My dad is coming to Portland in September to take a road trip though the North Cascades with me in my ‘80 SC Targa that he hasn’t seen yet.

Enjoy yourself! The insanity will begin but it will be worth it.

Great trip - will you do the Fraser River canyon? Think there are about 5 or 7 tunnels between Hope and Cache Creek. Any roads will be awesome though in that region. Enjoy and safe travels.

If only we had connected before I spent $2500 replacing mine! Targa’s all done and racking up the miles?

That’s one road we will not be doing unfortunately. From Hope we will be driving East through the Crow’s nest pass. I love the canyon though, such an historic road and yes, those tunnels!

Those are some beautiful places, but I'd be wishing I was out mountain biking all those great trails out there the whole time.

No baby seat for the 911 yet. I haven’t researched much but I think I’ll have to wait for a forward facing one. Jessica is petite but still I can’t see a rear facing one fitting there. Have fun in Edmonton, we’ll catch up before long.

Cross country biking is awesome here in BC. I never take for granted all the trails I have in my backyard. Golden is quickly becoming renown for its many miles of top shelf trails. Looks like you’re due for a trip up North!

Alright folks, lay it on me, what am I missing? This is you’re chance to tell me “ Dear god, don’t leave without a 7mm horizontal piston spaner!”

I wish I had a spare DME and alternator belt but they haven’t come in yet. I’ll bring the Bentley too.

Beautiful car and sounds like a fun trip! Wait till the kid is 2 or 3 years old, he or she will love the open car.

Porsche used to make a front-facing child seat that fit the back seats, but it was only available in Europe. I bought one at the factory during a visit in 1993, but no longer have it. Not sure what is available now.

Regarding your tools, you have the fan pulley wrench. I see you are waiting for a fan belt; do you have a socket that fits the fan nut?

Maybe bring a volt meter?

Honestly you probably won't need any of that stuff, but I do like to carry a tire plug kit. I'd rather use that on a flat than rely on the inflatable spare.

Do you have a jack? I carry a scissor jack.

Have a great trip!

Mark

That's a great route down the Duffy Lake from Kamloops to Horseshoe Bay and onto the Langdale Ferry to Sechelt. If you're not already you should consider heading north through Earls Cove to Powell River and over to Comox then back to West Vancouver through Nanaimo. That is an amazing scenic route for sure. We have a summer home on the Sunshine Coast near Sechelt and I love taking the Carrera over there. It is by no means the fastest highway ever but it is super cool. See if you can get into the Rockwater Resort or Painted Boat if you are planning on staying on the Coast.

Awesome and congrats on your first! Enjoy it, cause when the "insanity" begins your time will be minimize. But it will get better again eventually, just a little different....

Take a list of some important phone numbers so you don't have to rely on possibly nonexistent internet. You have mine but you're also going to mostly be on the other side of those big mountainy things.

If that funnel is for your oil, try to round up some one use paper ones. They pack up nice and small. Plus you don't have to clean them out before packing them up again.

If you're concerned about the fan belt and DME relay, I can meet you half wayish, in Banff or Lake Louise, and give you mine if you want. If not, be sure to pick them up in Vancouver. As Mark pointed out, you don't show a socket to remove your fan pulley nut.

I'm a little bit jealous of your trip. Have an awesome time!

Sounds like a great trip. I’m about to fly to Kelona in a weeks time to pick up my targa. It’s just getting the engine rebuilt and put back in. After I get it I was contemplating a quick trip through Calgary to see an old buddy and then up through the parkway and then through northern BC back to Kitimat. Can’t go wrong driving to BC if you ask me.

Congrats on the pending arrival and safe travels.

It’s a go! The car is all loaded up but unfortunately it was a top up departure. A few errands (like dropping off Lucifer, dark lord of the underworld to the cat sitter) and we’re off.

Good thing the top was up since we hit a few drops of rain on our way through Roger’s pass. The road to Revelstoke was uneventful aside from a few boneheads tailgating and passing while we were oncoming.

I love he smell of old leather and burnt oil. Jessica calls it “Eau de Porsche”. Tonight’s destination: Kamloops!

Thanks for all your support and offers of help. Kev, we need to do the Golden triangle this summer. I have a buddy in Field who’s getting his 928 back on the road. Lakeguy, let me know when you’re through Golden. Good luck with the Targa!

And for the American folks, that gas was $6.62/ gallon.
