Bring out your Cabs - 83 SC Cabs that is...

Ive been keeping a 911 SC Cabriolet Registry for the single year 1983 cabriolet for a few years. This is a call to hopefully surface a few more 83 cabs!

If you own, have owned or know of an 83 SC Cab please contact me with as much information as you can provide. Names are not shared as you'll see in the registry listings.

As of this post, here are some interesting 1983 SC Cabriolet stats.

US/Canada Stats:

To date I've tracked down 209 or 11.7% of the 1781 US/CA cars.
5 are no. longer with us and have gone to meet that great 911 in the sky.
  • Earliest build date: 11/82 - VIN: WP0EA0911DS170070 a Canadian delivery car
  • Latest build date: 7/83 - VIN: WP0EA0915DS171612 (originally owned by ZZ Top drummer) Frank Beard

^Coincidentally, both of the above are slant-nose conversions.

I also have further narrowed the range of when Porsche changed from the SC-style engine case with the round oil sump cover to the "new style" Carrera case by 50 cars.
  1. last SC engine case: WP0EA0917DS170574
  2. first Carrera engine case: WP0EA0911DS170618

That's a range of 44 cars, we're getting closer! Both of these cars have a 3/83 build date so we also now know that the changeover happened in March. I do have cars in the registry between these but unfortunately don't know what style engine case they have.

And here is a breakdown of colors where I can verify the actual color code:
  • Guards Red (027) 74 cars
  • Grand Prix White (908) 40 cars
  • Black (700) 35 cars
  • Slate Blue Metallic (661) 9 cars
  • Ruby Red Metallic (810) 6 cars
  • Light Bronze Metallic (966) 4 cars
  • Moss Green Metallic (20C) 3 cars
  • Quartz Gray Metallic (662) 3 cars
  • Chiffon (182) 5 cars
  • Pewter Metallic (655) 2 cars

And locations for the ones I know about:
  • Alabama 1 car
  • Arizona 8 cars
  • California 58 cars
  • Colorado 6 cars
  • Connecticut 7 cars
  • Florida 14 cars
  • Georgia 5cars
  • Illinois 5 cars
  • Indiana 5 cars
  • Kansas 2 car
  • Kentucky 1 car
  • Maryland 2 cars
  • Massachusetts 4 cars (including me!)
  • Michigan 3 cars
  • Missouri 3 cars
  • Montana 1 car
  • Nevada 4 cars
  • New Jersey 5 cars
  • New York 6 cars
  • North Carolina 2 cars
  • Ohio 2 cars
  • Oklahoma 1 car
  • Oregon 2 cars
  • Pennsylvania 5 cars
  • Rhode Island 1 car
  • South Carolina 2 cars
  • Tennessee 6 cars
  • Texas 6 cars
  • Utah 2 cars
  • Virginia 3 cars
  • Washington 5
  • Canada 9 cars

ROW Stats

65 are registered (2.7%) of the 2406 ROW cars.

We don't have any build dates for the ROW cars yet.
  • First VIN in registry: WP0ZZZ91ZDS150103
  • Last VIN in registry: WP0ZZZ91ZDS152161

38 of these are documented in the US.

9 cars are RHD

Gone but not forgotten . . .

Poor girl met her fate when an uninsured motorist illegally made a left hand turn and T-Boned her. (Already in database)

There is one more in Washington. My father in law was near the end of this build when he passed away last fall. Hopefully we can get it finished in the not to distant future.

Those are special cars...

I own a '78 Targa myself, but have always loved the '83 Cab. First year of that model, last of the wonderfully simple SC "G" models.

1983 SC Cabs are sweet. It would be the only Cab I would own.

Nice work. It's amazing to think that there are still 1500 cars unaccounted for. That's still a lot of cars. I don't see them on the roads (I lived in California for 10 years). I take notice when I see a SC Cab.

I did not know production was that high. Still I would think that they are out there in garages. I can't imagine that all of those were scrapped due to accidents and such.

The challenge is in finding them, I'm sure a lot of them exist. I actually subscribed to CarFax for a month and pounded in vins to find cars. The issue is that one of the numbers in the VIN is not predictable so it was slow going. Other than that, I search ads, craigslist, eBay and other sources for cars for sale and beg and plead to get the VIN if not listed!

At some point in the near future they will probably be considered the Speedster of the 911 Cab range. I believe that they are a ridiculous bargain considering...no one seems to care if it's an '83 or a Carrera cab. They will, they will....

Am I accounted for?

Sadly, I am selling my Porsches. Anyone has a Carfax account? Need to have one for the ‘83 Cab and ‘07 997. . Need to signup for Carfax before I get flamed

Updates to the US/CAN and ROW registries have been posted. The URL for the forum has changed to: Home | 911SC Cabriolet Registry

We're now up to 242 US/CAN cars (13.6%) and 91 ROW cars (3.8%) and 5 Japanese (5.6%)

The range of when the switch from SC engine blocks to Carerra blocks has been narrowed to 15 cars and happened in March of 1983.

Guards Red is by far the most popular color (84 cars) followed by Grand Prix White (47 cars) and Black (40 cars). My Moss Green Metallic has a new sibling, there are 3 now. And 5 cabs are documented no longer with us.
