Drove my car in the dark for the first time in a few weeks and noticed that the right hand tail and parking lights were out.
No problem thinks I - just change the bulbs. Wrong! After a while changing bulbs then checking the voltage at the bulb holders I find that the lights come on if the ignition is off and I indicate right?? The left side only work as they should. They don't come on when the ignition is on - only the turn signals. I have not done any work on the electrics recently and they were working properly the last time I checked. Help. ------------------ Alan Brown 86 Carrera 3.2 |

they all do that. bonus from the factory. use them at night when it's parked in a tight spot, to let other drivers see your car better.

John's right-the parking lights on one side ro the other can be left on with ignition off and key out to show the car better when parked against a curb on a narrow street-methinks it would run down the battery on a long night, though.
If your left side turn signals work ok, but the right side don't, then the problem is most likely in the turn signal/parking light relay. Use the electrical schematic for your year on Pelican's home page (here's a link) to track down the circuit path. ------------------ Clay McGuill '66 912 My 912's restoration website, '97 Jeep Cherokee, '70 Ford Bronco My Bronco's rebuild site |

I had the same problem on my '70 S I took out the fuse (in the front compartment and cleaned up the contacts on either side of the fuse with some emery cloth.I also removed the wire from each side and cut off the old part and exposed some fresh cooper(about 1/2 an inch. One of my contacts needed to be bent back a little as it wasn't holding the fuse tight and would leave the fuse lose and therfore not working when I drove over any bump. Finally in the end I also replaced the fuse. It worked for my right side marker lights, clock, and interior lights. I takes about a half hour if your careful and should be good for another 30 years.BTW if the left side doesn't come on when the ignition is off then you may have a problem with that wire as well, if I remember correctly the parking lights are on there own fuse on each side.

What you guys are describing with the lights is normal on the 911. In Europe there are a lot of cities where there just is not enough parking and people "double park" in the streets.
You will park on the outside of the cars already parked, with the one outside running light on. While having dinner if someone needs out they just beep their horn, and everyone comes out and moves the cars, then resumes dinner. Takes a bit to get used to this but it works when there are not any available parking spots... JA |

Thanks for your help.
I maybe did not describe the symptoms well enough. The tail/parking lights on both sides work as they should using the indicator stalk. The right hand side do not work at all with the ignition on using the headlight switch. I.e. when I switch on the headlights only the left side tail comes on. Its driving me nuts! ------------------ Alan Brown 86 Carrera 3.2 |

My experience with this type of symptom has been the fuses, and.or a bad ground on the light assembly...

I believe all Porsches have this side light feature built in. It was intended to be used when you pulled off the road (autobahn for example). When you turned the ignition off, this unique system alerted passing motorists of your problem. It catches me alot when I pull into parking areas and my turn signal is in the on position without the blinking action.
