A couple weeks ago I posted a wtb for a pedal cluster. A guy named bolaji contacted me via email. Said his user name was macfly and he couldn't use pm's. Searched the user name and it came up with user on the bmw motorcycle forum, last post was 2017. His PayPal address didn't match his name.

Same old story. I posted a response to a for-sale item thread. He responded to me via PM with a phone number to contact him. I did not notice his username was different than the seller. I called, we chatted, agreed to sale. He wanted payment via paypal "friends & family". I paid as "goods & services" for protection and covered the fee. He texted back very angry about taxes he would pay, etc...

Warning bells went off. That's when I double checked and noticed what happened.
Paypal just refunded me.
I can't believe I almost fell for it.

I'm now communicating with the real seller.

Excellent. Best possible outcome.
And by the way, even though you got your refund, their tax reporting still includes your original payment as income. It does not get deducted.
Maybe this is the way to stick it back to them.
